Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.
With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. You can only buy Urthel Vlaemse Bock in the United States. This heart-warming dubbel of 7.5% of alcohol, traditionally top fermented and bottle conditioned flamey dark ale has a tastefully rich, malty, slightly sweet flavour. Vlaemse Bock's very fine distinctive bitterness makes you forget the long cold winter.

Cellar’s Tasting. Dark brown color with a thin head. Definitely a bockish aroma of strong malt, but there’s a breadiness there that I would associate with Belgians. The taste prooves it right. While the strong, sweet malt is there like in most bocks, the yeast plays the Belgian fiddle for sure. The fruit and doughyness are dead give aways. Interestingly enough, it seems stronger than a Dubbel, but not quite a Quad. Kind of like a Triple that’s not golden and all hopped up. Very nice.

On tap. Dark brown, big beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel. Flavour is soft malts, dark chocolate, caramel sweetness balanced by a nice dry finish. Mouthfeel is like chocolate milk. Improved version of the Vlaemse bock.

Pours dark reddish brown with big beige head. Aromas are powerful- lots of raisin and prune, with molasses and honey. Tons of fruity esters- banana, raspberry, and apricot. Some clove, ginger, and nuttiness in there as well. Flavor is very sweet at first, with lots of dark fruit and brown sugar. Then turns slightly acidic with a sharp sense to it. Palate isn’t completely full- some smooth texture subsiding into some prickly and almost sharp acidity. Finish is quite dry. A decent offering, but nothing fantastic.
