A vigorous pour produces an almost three-finger thick, light tan colored head that sits on top of a strangely orange tinged, pale amber colored brew. When held up to the light the beer shows a very pretty, lightly hazed, reddish-tinged, very orange, slightly gold color. Interesting aromatics of concentrated pale malts, caramelized orange zest, dusty malt, pear notes, a touch of melon, slightly musty / funky and a slightly tart note that is a bit like pears or perhaps even a touch of tamarind. The nose on this is not quite as aromatic as I might have hoped, but it is interesting enough.
Somewhat sweet, but definitely rich and chewy (especially as it moves across the tongue). Lots of pale malt character here with notes of toasted grain, crushed soda crackers, honey notes and a biscuit like note in the finish. The honey notes play up a light herbal note somehow; really the malt and herbal notes combine to make me think of a herbal varietal honey. The texture of this is interesting, it is thick and somewhat creamy, but has enough carbonation to fight this, almost to the point of discord; while I like the texture overall it can be a little disjointing at times. The malt character has an almost aged character to it (though age probably has nothing to do with it); notes of golden raisins, stale yet still moist apricots, dried and oxidized pears, and even a bit of star fruit. At times this can have hints of butterscotch to it, though this really seems to be a mix of the other flavors.
Somehow this is a bit dull tasting; certainly not bad and nothing seems particularly off, but I is just not quite as well balanced and flavorful as I expected. jobyone (234), Charlotte, USA
