A rich malt nose, primarily of dark bread, comes forward with strong mineral notes leading to an almost smoky quality. The sweetness verges on caramel but dares not. Soft flower aromas and a trace of wet grass reveal subtle hopping. Black cherries, candied plums and a hint of licorice add to the experience. Firmly sweet throughout while never encroaching upon cloying. Light acidity in the middle and moderate finishing bitterness help in this aim. The flavor generally resembles the aroma with, perhaps, a greater focus on the fruit and less on the malt. Substantial body with a smooth and delicately oily texture and moderate carbonation. Very clean, very refined, very classy. Didn’t taste something nasty, so I guess it didn’t contain diacetyl. Very good aroma, malty, sweet, bockish. Dark brownred appearance, nice head, excellent. Initial sweet flavour, overpowered by a nice sharp bitterness. Pretty bitter for a bock, which is a nice thing. Excellent! Liberty (52), Stompwijk, Netherlands

Tasted this beer on the Bockbeer festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands, on draft. From last year I remember that this bockbeer was a good one. Unfortunately this year the beer is terribly bad. Something went wrong in the brewing process. The main (and only) flavour of this beer was diacetyl. The volunteers of the festival should not have sold this beer. But it seems they never heard of diaceteyl. I would recommend this beer to everyone who does not know how diacetyl in beer tastes like. Mabey this beer is better on the Bockbeer festival in Amsterdam (end of October). The Friese Bierbrouwerij who have made this beer also made a other bock, called Twels Bok. This beer was fine and there was no diacetyl in the flavour.

Malt and licorice linger all the way from first sniff to lingering aftertaste, quite dry in the mouth and with a hop bitterness battling agains the sweet licorice in the finish.

Malty cherryaroma. Roasted malt flavor. Absolutely dry beer, but maybe a bit thin. Some hidden apple fruitiness. Not as great as some raters might suggest, but still a good beer, worth a try. Indra (2036), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 30, 2002 Bottled. Malty aroma of caramel, dark bread, faint chocolate and just the slightest hint of wood. Deep mahogany with a respectable dun colored head that stuck around for a bit. Flavor is largely sweet but certainly not overly so, with some rich toffee up front and moving to a grainy, bready, nutty maltiness. Finish sees a bit of lightly spicy hop flavor mingle with the fading malt. Medium bodied and palate is quite smooth. I really found myself enjoying this one. Would love to try it on draught. Hand delivered to me by a friend who lives in Utrecht. Prosit, Allison!
