Pours a golden dark mahogany with a small, creamy and slightly grey-beige head. There is a stunning level of lacing in this beer! Powerful aroma of dried fruits (raisins and plums) along with a dose of dark chocolate. Lightly oily mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet with a weak background of chocolate. Then a lot of burnt sugar appears, and it mixes well with the lingering alcohol at the end. There is a touch of tartness at the end. bu11zeye (5621), Frisco, Texas, USA

Aroma of sweet dark caramel malt and bready Belgian yeast with a touch of raisiny complexity. Body starts sweet and malty with nice, full-bready texture toward a drier, earthy sweet finish. A nice Belgian strong ale. Bov (5495), Bienne, Switzerland

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 7, 2005 Dense off-white head like whipped egg-white; opaque dark brown beer, with orangey shine. Earthy, leafy, mossy nose, but all very subdued. And dark malts, of course, bière Wallonne oblige Mix of cookies and spices, but in a clashing way, alas. I get continously conflicting flavours; generally (quite) sweet, spicey, bitterish, piney. Still, it’s OK, I suppose. Slick, nearly fatty, chewy; sweet aftertaste, liquorice-like. Reasonable winter ale. Not too spicey, just a tad too sweet. And (of course?), lacking character and balance.
