Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
From the Valhalla Brewery in Unst, comes this dark, full bodied ale. Named from the title fondly given to Shetland by expatriate Shetlanders, it brings you a taste of the beautiful Shetland Isles and their clean, sparkling environment. Auld Rock was the first ale brewed by Valhalla Brewery. With an ABV of 4.5% it is full-bodied, dark ale, with a well balanced malt and hop nose, leading to a clean and smooth finish.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Like all bottled beers from this brewery, it is filtered to remove all remaining yeast (but possibly not pasteurised?). ABV is 4.5%. Dark brown colour, low head. Nice aroma of chocolate, mild coffee and lightly roasted malts. The flavour is moderately fruity (dark fruits) and roasty, fairly dry, notes of mild coffee, hints of dark chocolate and resin. Pleasant to drink. More of a porter than an old ale in my book.

Pours hazy amber red with a small tanned creamy head. Smells roasted barley, soy sauce and a bit floral. Tastes lightly sweet and bitter and finishes sour and salty. Light to medium bodied. Milky/watery texture and softly carbonated. (9.12.2009 Bottle @ Cardinal, Onsdag^2)

Cask conditioned at The Kent Beer Fest, Canterbury. Brown with slight head. Quite a smokey malt in this one with a tobacco type background, malty, peaty with a plummy fruitiness. Reasonable.

Bottle, bought @ Kolding Vinhandel.
Pours clear deep chestnut red with a small, off-white film head. Aroma is fruity, raspberries, a bit of peaty malts. Light sweet caramel. Medium carbonation, thin-ish mouthfeel. Flavour is a bit weird, lots of smokey malts. Some caramel malts, dryness. Peaty notes with a very dry finish. Different, but rather likeable.

Bottle, shared by Papsoe. A clear, copper-colored beer with an off-white to beige head. Some peat aromas initially, followed by a malty, burnt, almost bonfire-like aroma. Peat and caramel in the mouth, with some fruityness to support. Peat and caramel in the finish. Medium to full body, rather dry. A rather uninteresting beer, but I like the peat in this one. 50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden dark brown with a small white head. Roasted malt, breadish and light spiced aroma. Mild smoked flavoured, roasted malt to breadish. Light bitterness and vague floral note. Roasted and dark malt flavoured lasting impression into the finish.

Cloudy dark amber with a tiny off white head. Aroma had smoke, roasted malt and caramel notes. Flavour was quite smoked and had roasted malt, caramel and cigars. Finished smoed.
