Tap at Valley. Damn it, I knew this wasn’t Nitro! Nose of coffee and light dark chocolate. Flavor is the same with a slight olive/graininess that put me off.

Bottle sampled at Noog Four-0 5/31/08 courtesy of beerguy101: Pours a nearly opaque with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of dry smoky grainy dark malts and lots of black licorice. Body starts with decent fullness and earthy dark caramel and chocolate malts with a drier toasty grainy character and peppery black licorice before the finish. Could use some more sweetness for balance.

4oz. sample at the brewpub. I wish I had gotten more of this for a more in depth rating, but I think I got a good handle on it. Nice roasted aroma with tar, charcoal, and licorice. Very little head and dark brown/black in color. This was a pretty dry stout, with little sweetness and mostly roasted, slightly smoky flavors. Tar, charcoal, and a bit of dark chocolate for the most part. It has a nice, muted bitter finish. I would like to go back for some more.

Medium sized tan head, retention is good with some thin lace left behind. Black colored brew, ruby edging. Nose is chocolate, roast with faint coffee notes. Body is med/full, oily with a gentle carbonation. Well balanced roast and chocolate flavors backed up by coffee and cocoa, light licorice notes and some earthy hoppiness. Fairly dry roasty finish that lasts. Very nice Stout, an easy sipper. Props to AgentSteve for the bomber!

Tap at brewpub with Jon. Black with a light brown head. Aroma of fruit, oats, cocoa, roasted malt and a hint of coffee. Flavor was much more roasted than the aroma led on. Also some floral and coffee like elements. Solid.

22oz. bomber, with another big thank you to AgentSteve for the hookup! Pours a dark brown/black with a creamy two finger tan head, moderate retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, with chocolate, coffee grounds, and dried oat flakes. Flavor is also roasty, with more chocolate, coffee and oats. Nothing overly complex, but an enjoyable stout just the same, thanks again Steve!
