Commercial Description:
Ingredients and techniques from two different areas come together to produce the beer in this bottle. Van Twee (From Two) is the remarkable result of a collaboration between two breweries know for extreme innovation: Bell’s Brewery of Kalamazoo, MI and De Proef Brouwerij of Lochristi, Belgium. Special emphasis was placed on using ingredients from both Belgium and Michigan in designing this beer. Michigan is renowned for producing sour, dark cherries of superior quality, and a significant quantity of cherry juice was added to the brew. Deep hued Belgian candi sugar adds to the complex flavor of the beer. The sugar used for bottle conditioning came from native Michigan sugar beets. A finishing fermentation with vinous Brettanomyces strain of yeast complements the unique New Zealand hop variety, Nelson Sauvin. The result is broadly a cherry infused ’mash-up’ of the porter and dubbel styles, brewed to an original gravity of 1.072 and fermented with multiple strains of yeast. Each ingredient used brings a subtle hint of a varied fruit such as plum/prune from the roasted malts; gooseberry/grape from the hops; pear/banana from the yeast and specialty sugar; and of course cherry. These flavors are wrapped in a rich and complex roasted malt base that imparts flavors reminiscent of chocolate and coffee--much like the famous filled chocolates of Belgium. We hope you enjoy drinking this beer as much as we enjoyed making it for you.

Shared 750ml. bottle among grateful friends, donated by a distributor friend. A large sample was poured for me to a Czech-pils glass showing a very dark brown hue with ruby tones peeking through, a frothy, off white to light tan head, and ultra-clingy, web-like lacing. The aroma was immediately barnyard and leather, roasty malt, with some chocolate and sweet dark cherry notes. The cherry washed out a little in the flavor, roasted malt and a baker’s variety chocolate continued, along with light tartness and vinous qualities. The carbonation was lively, but not too overbearing, as the beer finished fairly dry. Nice complexity and altogether enjoyable.

Bottle from Belmont Party. Poured clear reddish brown color with a large frothy brown head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy chocolate, banana and soft cherry aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy complex sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met by a complex good beer.

The pour appears to be a dark brown, almost black, but when held to the light, it is the color of black cherries (surprise, surprise) - thick, well-retained off-white head - earthy cherry skins hit the nose first, followed by notes of chocolate, coffee, prunes, light oxidation, just the slightest bit of funky brett character - full but creamy carbonation in the mouth - tart cherry flavor up front, followed by some lightly developed brett character, a touch of acidity - some sweetness develops through the middle, bringing some prune and raisin flavors with it - some chocolate and roasted malt reminiscent of a porter of stout arrive late, but only stay on the palate for a moment - tart cherry returns in the finish - quite an enjoyable brew - better than their last collaboration.

750 ml bottle shared by csbosox. Pour is a hazed deep brown with ruby highlights. The head is off white, one inch tall and falls quick. Aroma of mild roast, light sour and a straw grassiness. Nicely soft and fresh. Taste is cherry sweet with slight sour, with the roasty maltiness behind that, and then big dry Brett characteristics through to the finish. The flavors played together really nicely. I liked the darker roastier element brightened up by the Brett. Palate is medium, with a high level of carbonation. The finish as mentioned is quite dry. I think I would have enjoyed this more if the carbonation had been dialed down a bit. Regardless, nice one - thanks for sharing Chris.

Thanks to the Tampa Crew for the share. Pours dark, hazy cola brown with a tan/ khaki head. Nose is cola, brett, some funk, tart, sourness, fruit/ berry doused in sour, and vinegar. The flavor is similar with tartness, cocoa-esque dark fruit, malt, vinegar, more berry, and brett that lingers into the finish. Medium-bodied and pretty nice, excellent for a style I don’t care too much for.

Draught at Capital Alehouse Downtown Richmond Location amongst good friends. A dark brown with big thick tan head lasting. Aroma is malt and dark sugars combined with fruity feel to create a cotton candy almost nose and taste. Something throughout this beer reminds me of sugar candies the whole time. Other flavors include chocolate and cherry sweetness. Odd texture with a quick finish.

Bottle from SL. The pour was deep brown with some red-mahoganey type hues, strong pillowy head and lacing. The aroma was roast, chocolate, deep rich cherries and some dark fruits, light funk/bret. The flavor followed, the cherries were rich, nice dark fruit malts, interesting contribution from the roastiness and chocolate elements (porter-ish aspects). Mouthfeel was big but not thick and syrupy, airy from the bubbles. A nice brew.

draft @ Brouwers Cafe - dark reddish brown with thick tan head; big malty nose of rich chocolate and slightly tart cherries; crazy soft texture that is a decadent combo of chocolate cherry candy; very faint tartness; silky mouthfeel with some coffee showing up too; dark fruit, thinness texture with an impression of valentine’s day candy; wow, a lovely brew with perfect level of tartness and lots of rich chocolate; yummy

2009 Bottle - Pours dark and ruddy brown with a large, frothy beige head...aroma is tart cherry, some wood astringency, bitter cocoa and metal...flavour is fairly consistent, chocolate and sour cherry, oaky tannin, some smoke lurking behind the dominating flavours...plenty of carbonation, as it opens, the dusty brett becomes more noticable and enjoyable, and the whole package comes together a bit more...tasty stuff...
