Pours a gorgeous blood mahogany with a big thick foamy beige head. Nose is sweet caramel, sour cherry and wood. Flavor is quite acidic with lots of vinegar notes, very wine like complex layering of sour cherry, wood, caramel. Slight vinegary bitterness on the backend to even out the sweetness. This is a terrific sour ale. alexanderj (2268), Chino Hills, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Apr 26, 2009 On tap at Blue Palms. Color was reddish brown with an off white head. Aroma of vinegar and grapes; I don’t really like the aroma. Flavor was better, but still had the vinegar presence, but with the addition of fruit and sugar. A few years ago I would have hated this one. 6ROW (258), corpus christi, Texas, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 20, 2009 appearance is hands down 5 -- dark but wild artificial even chemical like dark red hue. aroma of sherry, cherries, and merlot grapes. flavor is foremost of strong wine like elements of pressed grapes and some booze. there is still a bit of a ? in the aroma, which i attribute to some yeast character i am not fammiliar with. i was hoping for stronger yeast character, this is quite subdued. a bit sweet and a bit tart, cherries are always creeping up in the background and sometimes more. cheeta (904), Langå, Denmark

Pours brown with beige head.
Aroma was unique and really what I am looking for in a good sour.
vinegary, wood, dark fruits with some red wine / raisins.
Taste, sour dark fruits (cherry skin), vinegary with nice tingly mouthfeel giving the palate a champagne like feel.
Sour raisins almost wine like, but with the overall beer remaining very drinkable.
Excellent beer. I have tried this beer several times and it seems that the end product fluctuates a lot. Adam77 (407), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA

Remind me the MacCallahan advertisement on TV at least ten years ago...
Anyway. Duchesse is special: never tasted one similar until now. Colour is dark red; smells woody (probably the oak where the ale age). Sour flavour, between vinegar and wine, and the aroma too, except a touch of cherry.
