Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

from bottle, 25 cl. Today with Marc, Jerre, Leen, ... Redbrown ale, with a beige head. Delicious aroma sour, bit wood. Taste was almost perfect. Bit sour, sweet, good in balance. Some fruit and a woodiness in the aftertaste. Nice sour aftertaste with some oak that.

Bottle. Low but lasting off-white head. Clear dark brown body. Acidic lemon caramel aroma with vineous notes. Sweet and spicy berries flavor, soft smooth and a bit boring. No edges. Low carbonation. Short aftertaste.

Appearance: Clear dark red/brown. NO head, just washed glass, thought I dried it well though. Aroma: Sour cherry/apple straight up... nothing else, pure tart in the nose Flavor: Well this is different. Moderate tart, very rich dark caramel/toffee flavor. Definitely some sweetness.. candi sugary sweetness. The normal fruit going on, although leaning towards the darks such as plumb. Mouthfeel: delicate, syrupy a bit, kinda thick, but very pleasant and well carbed Overall: Awesome new taste. Never had anything like it and I’m really enjoying the experience. Very satisfying flemish and I’m guessing very traditional, original and to style.

Pours a dark amber with a thin layer of foam. Aroma is slightly sour cherry. Good gritty brown malt backbone to this sour, refreshing and well-balanced with just enough sour to keep things interesting. Good carbonation, gentle aftertaste. The Duchess is still my favourite, but this is a very palatable sour for those not taken to the style (or puckering, for that matter).

Bottled. Dark brown coloured, big lasting brown head. Sour nose, some oak and fruit. Initially sour and fruity flavour, which evolves to several other flavours including oak and some vinegar. Lasting finish, somewhat dry and tart. Quality brew, no doubt about it, but the Duchesse is just more my kind of Flemish Sour.

Bottle. Has a dark brown body with ruby highlights and a one finger fizzy head. Aromas are punky and sour with and earthy character. Vinegar sourness with nice fruit (pie cherries?) and an almost salty presence in the flavor. Nice and I was jonesing for a sour ale lately, so this really hits the spot.

After drinking this beer, I figured Vichtenaar was French for vinegar. This tasted like drinking a bottle of weak vinegar to me. It was smooth but I was barely able to finish it. The aroma was decent. The beer looks good. It just doesn’t taste good to me. At least it has alcohol in it, unlike vinegar.
