Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Deep dark red and almost brown color. Roasted malt aromas with a lot of fruit in there like plum and raisin. Reminds me of a light port wine aroma. As you sip the fruit flavors explode in your mouth. Big red fruit flavors with some grape and apple as well. Slight sweetness and sour is faint and upfront on the palate but comes again as you finish your drink.

Aroma is that of a sweet vinaigrette, some tart apples, some sweet fruit too. Pours a reddish color with a decent bubbly head and lacing. A little sweetness up front reminds me of apple cider, with a nice light tart middle, onto a vinaigrette like finish. Has an apply sweetness that lingers at all times. Good.

Sweet aroma with a lot of sour notes. . .paradox much? The malt is definitely there in the flavor. Pours a great deep red color with a thick short lived white/tan head. WONDERFUL sour flavor. Makes your mouth pucker at the start, but then smooths right out and rewards you with a lot of nice sour cherry malt flavors. Very good.

(2/27/08) Bottle at Zolder in Bruges. A reddish brown beer. Very woody and earthy aroma with some malt, fruits and a bit of caramel. A really nice flavor with a great balance between malty, somewhat sugary, sweetness and a funky oak sourness. Medium-bodied. Delicious and highly drinkable.

Apparently, I need to find myself more sour ales. This is is average, as are most all fo the ones I’ve had, yet I like them all. I guess a 3.7 total average, and 3.9 for me isn’t excatly an average beer. Anywoo. What a great beer. Very much apples, first and foremost. A lot of oaken flavors. Lots of deliciousl sour notes. Man do I like!
