Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Bottle, many thanks to Glen for this one, cheers mate Pours nice soft red colour with toff white bubbly head. wonderful aroma soft sourness very cherry like but really addictive. Lovely soft sour tang to this beer, tastes like it’s been well aged, some cherries again maybe and also some slightly sour oaky and vanilla flavours, very good beer.

Bottle at Sergio’s - Pours ruby with a wispy tan head. Aroma of cherry, dusty yeast, leather and tart fruit. Taste is lightly sweet, lightly sour with notes of cherries and oak. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with lush carbonation. Very nice sour ale, and one of my new favorites.

Rerate. From bottle. Pours a nice clear red brown with decent but diminishing off white head. Very nice lacing on the glass though. Nose is musty oak, Sour malt vinegar, sweet vanilla beans, and a touch of roasted malt. Flavors are sour cherries, touch of pear, good dose of candy grape, bit of oak, some evident iron. Ends somewhat metallic and dry with hints of oak,. Body is creamy sweet with fluffy carbonation. This beer is good but not nearly as good as I remember... perhaps my tstes are evolving and I just want some more sour. This one is a tad bit to sweet for my sour ale.

Rootbeer/reddish colored pour and soda like consistency. Very active fizzy thin head that fizzes itself away quickly. Full aroma, nutty, some vinegar, and grenadine. Extremely drinkable sour ale, yet not very interesting at all. Smooth cherry candy-cane and a little bit of soy sauce. Low sourness/tartness. Easy to gulp like soda.

Bottle, 5.1%. Good sweet and acidic aroma. Clear brown colour. Small light brown head. The flavour is OK acidic with some sugary sweetness and a little metal. Quite refreshing.

275ml bottle (One Pint Pub, Helsinki, Belgian Beer Week 2008)
Deep reddy brown, loose bready head. Sour berry aroma, some odd vegetable tinge perhaps, and some butter and dust). Decent carbonation, which heightens the sharpness of the sourness, also quite sweet and fruity. Upon swallowing the flavour broadens out into a massive mellow maltiness. Sweet malty finish. It’s not too sweet, but one notch less sweetness and this would be an absolutely perfect sour brun.

RB BE #400: 25 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden amber to deep maghoni with a creamy/crispy light brown head. Cherry fruity, light woody and dried fruity aroma. Flavourful, slight woody, dried fruity yet fresh from the cherries. Sweet, yet not overly so. Finish holds a nice dryish and very controlled sour note to a distinct fruity note. Nice
