Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

275ml bottle (One Pint Pub, Helsinki, Belgian Beer Week 2008)
Deep reddy brown, loose bready head. Sour berry aroma, some odd vegetable tinge perhaps, and some butter and dust). Decent carbonation, which heightens the sharpness of the sourness, also quite sweet and fruity. Upon swallowing the flavour broadens out into a massive mellow maltiness. Sweet malty finish. It’s not too sweet, but one notch less sweetness and this would be an absolutely perfect sour brun.

RB BE #400: 25 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden amber to deep maghoni with a creamy/crispy light brown head. Cherry fruity, light woody and dried fruity aroma. Flavourful, slight woody, dried fruity yet fresh from the cherries. Sweet, yet not overly so. Finish holds a nice dryish and very controlled sour note to a distinct fruity note. Nice

Dark walnut appearance with a large, dense, well laced, beige head. Tart fruit aroma with earthy, woodsy characteristics. Taste is sweet and sour, fruity, acidic, vinous. Just sits on the palate so well. Long lasting, acerbic finish.

bottle. pours a deep mahogany with a thinnish off-white head that fades quickly. smell of sour cherries, red licorice, balsamic vinegar, and oak. sour cherry and woody taste, some carmel and bready malts. the sourness is assertive and starts in right away, not leaving you much time to wonder what it is you’re tasting. lingering oaky taste in the finish. medium body, a bunch of carbonation, sticky mouthfeel that comes from the puckering sourness. this has become one of my new favorite styles, and i think this beer is exemplary. not quite as deep a flavor profile as duchess, but quite a bit more sour. i’ll definitely drink this again.

11.2 oz. bottle at Teresa’s Next Door, Wayne, PA. Poured deep ruby with scant head. Appeared undercarbonated, but maintained a complex mouthfeel. Flavor consisted of tasty tart fruits. Big fan of these offerings from Verhaeghe.
