Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Looks like a watered down Pepsi...smells like sweet vinegar and fermented apples....small bubbles and creamy, reminds me of a Moscato d’Asti with apple cider....small head, tan...sweet on the front, sour on the rear

Bottle. pours aggressively and brown with a fierce tan head that reduces quickly. Fruity and sour yoghurt aroma with sweet spicy notes as well. Flavours are quite sweet with a sour fruit finish.Quite fizzy. A nice Flemish Old Brown ale, for sure.

A cellar’s tasting and badgerbedn’s cellar reduction night. Sour caramel malt nose with brown sugar and dark fruits. Dark body. First bottle was a little light on the mouthfeel but the second bottle at Ben’s was satisfyingly sour with some fruity sweetness.

Sampled at Badgerben’s Cellar Reduction Night. Pours a dark ruby brown brew with a fast dissolving fizzy tan head that disipates clean. Aroma of tart cherries, dark pitted fruit, some brown sugar and a touch of oak. Taste is slightly spritzy, tart, medium bodied with falvors of tart cherries and some sour dark fruit funk. Finish has a more sweet aftertaste than the initial tart flavor. A pretty decent sour ale.

Cellar Reduction Night, Oct 20, 2007. Dark red color with no head. Aroma of tart cherries and brown sugar. Plenty of dried cherry flavor. Sweet malt and a little oak. Not incredibly complex, but very good.

This was not as good as its sister beer, Duchesse De Bourgogne, but was very enjoyable nonetheless. Poured to a reddish orange with decent off white head and good carbonation bubbles. Nose was a strong sour fruit, and the mouthfeel was tangy and tingly, which, like the Duchesse, quickly turned sweet. The finish was the same bittersweet found in the Flemish Sour Duchesse, though not as pronounced. All and all, a good beer, with many of the same qualities of the Duchesse Flemish Sour, just a little muted in each category.

Poured a Dark Brown. Sweet and Sour taste immediately on your palate. NIce light Beige head, with a fair amount of lacing. Fruit flavors were strong throughout. tasty, but a tad sweet for me.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours dark brown, small head, and high carbonation. Big cherry nose and a bit vinegary. Flavor of sour green apples, tart cherries, with subtle oak hidden in the back. Kind of reminds me of an apple Jolly Rancher. This gets better with every sip.
