Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Pours a murky brown. Spicy cinnamon, brown sugar and green apple on the nose. Not as tart as I remember, but very well balanced anyways, with a good dose of brown sugar balancing out the tart green apple character. A hint of earthy funkiness appears prominantly on the finish.

Pours a clear but very dark ruby with a light tan head off an aggressive pour. The head falls fast. Nose is a beautiful combination of wood and cherries. Flavor is a great sweetness combined with firm cherry tones. The wood character really meshes with everything else so well that it provides the perfect punctuation. Feel is great. The bubble still kicks me in the back of my mouth after it’s lingered in my mouth for a while. Overall a great drinking experience. Elegant and smooth and well made. Very well worth trying out and having more beyond.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 22 Sep 2007) Dark reddish brown colour with firm pale brown head. Malty, slightly sourish nose with notes of wood, chocolate and black-currant. Malty, lactic taste with black-currant, dark fruit, cherries, hints of smoke and a bitter-sweet finish. Balanced and nice flemish sour.

0.25 l bottle. Mahagony color with small tan head. Sweet and sour aroma with toffee, licorice, cranberry, vanilla, vinegar and meat broth. The flavor fairly sweet but still balanced by acidity. Disdinctive licorice and vanilla note. A bit too sweet.

11.2 Oz Bottle via footy. Sugar and heavy vinegar aroma. Weighty and wet. Some nice berry acids float up. Not stinging. Definite balsamic tones. Reduced strawberries, candied cherries, and light plum juice. Pours a very royal crystal clear deep garnet and ruby, tinged with a hue of mahogany. Light rim of beige foam forms on the edge. Flavor is pretty mellow. Immediately there are some sharp aceto-notes, but then it washes into some watery sugar. A bit of berry brandy and light strawberry juice, but not much density, sourness or character. Edges more towards a straight fruit than anything wild and crazy. Malt carries some weak caramel that plays with the lightly acidic body and the berry sugars. Not nearly wild enough for me. A bit bland, but clean and dryly finishing. Rather calm.

250ml bottle erupted all over worktop. Cola brown and fizzy with a solid beige head. Intensely vinous snout packed with cherryish fruit. A dab of vinegar. Sharp and guezey until a chocolatey roasted malt undercurrent kicks in. Plenty of oak. Interesting

Pours a dark amber with a small, fluffy light tan head. Sweet acidic sour aromas fill the nose, funky cherries come to mind. Hints of mustard too. The taste is very acidic, very fruity sweet also. Big cherry or raspberry flavor is most dominant. I’d say cherry was the stand out. Not cheek puckering sour, but enough to warrent a flemish sour style. Fruity, sweet finish and aftertaste. Pretty good.
