Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Copper pour with a beige head. Tart cherry nose. Easy, smooth, tart flavors, cherry and raspberry. Very cherry finish. A bit simplistic, but very good!

Deep amber pour, with a tan head. Aroma is sour fruit, sweet malt, and wood. Flavor is a mix of sweet and sour. Fruit, malt, sugar, and oak. Body on the heavy side. Very interesting, and not like anything else I remember having before.

Bottle: Poured reddish amber with a off white color head. Aroma is sour fruit, but if you continue to breathe past you will identify the spice hops and malt. The taste is a sweet metalic, fruit, and malt blend not as acidic as some flemish sours which suprised me. Glad I picked this one up because its just another case of giving a style another chance!

thick foamy light tan head. ruby chestnut color and garnet at the edges. head goes quickly. aroma is sweet syrupy malt and over-ripe sour cherries. slightly cheesy, sweaty aroma too. high carbonation, flavor starts a bit metallic, but sweet and sour to true form with more sweet malt and a bit of acidic balsalmic vinegar. fainter sour cherry and a finish that is a bit metallic and even sweaty tasting.

in bottle from Dirty John’s grocery. pours a dark brown with a purple tinge and a medium dark tan head. beer has a mild malty vinegar aroma. an apple cider flavor with a touch of sour yankee cider emerges. this beer does not smell or taste like battery acid. rather it reminds me of the PAAS vinegar-based dye for easter eggs. this beer really grows on you. it has an undercurrent of sweetness that helps move the sourness through. it finishes quite dry. at room temperature it is horridly acidic in a voltage-ready way.

Bottle shared with Blankboy, his bottle. Reddish brown, thick foamy brown’ish head. Vinegar as well as icing sugar in interesting pleasing aroma. Nice taste - tart, sour, but also subdued and sweet - very accessible and drinkable. Not complex, but very tasty. Nice tart finish - maybe with even a hint of vanilla. Nice stuff, got us both off guard, it is really good!

Aroma of dates and cherries. Color is deep brown with a minimal head. Nice fruity sweetness along with an oak aspect. Finishes a bit more on the tart side. Medium body with good carbonation.

My bottle (12oz), shared with tupalev. Pours a clear very deep ruby-brown with an average size beige head. Pleasant aroma of sour fruit, vinegar, yeast and oak well balanced by some sweetness. Nice flavour of sour cherries, a little vinous along with some sweetness, oak, dark fruit and a dry finish. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated. This one caught me by surprise, it’s a really friggin’ good Flemish Sour!
