Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

My bottle (12oz), shared with tupalev. Pours a clear very deep ruby-brown with an average size beige head. Pleasant aroma of sour fruit, vinegar, yeast and oak well balanced by some sweetness. Nice flavour of sour cherries, a little vinous along with some sweetness, oak, dark fruit and a dry finish. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated. This one caught me by surprise, it’s a really friggin’ good Flemish Sour!

Merlot Red Color with White Ring. Dry Oak, Tarted Malt, Sweet Lightly Roasted Malt, Fruit and Spices on the Nose. Medium Mouthfeel. Surprisingly Clean. Tart Cherry, Light Malt and Oak Notes...Flavor is Amazingly Subtle Considering the Aroma. Still a Very Nice Drinking Sour.

Quite dark, but under halogen it has a slightly hazy beautiful reddish mahogany color. The off-white head quickly flattened, leaving lace tatters. A fresh cherry aroma. Arguably a sour note. Also arguably sweetness as the glass approaches the lips. Thin to medium bodied. Mouth is full of oak and non-sweet cherry all at once, along with a bit of spice. Stunning. An astringent woody bite arises in the finish, along with a little bitter. Tart yes, sour not all that much. The extended lagering must smooth it out.

12 oz bottle, via dsnowden. Pours a dark garnet colored body, clear, under a fizzy beige head that faded quickly. Lots of lacing though. Aroma has a noticable sour cherry in the fore, but there’s a weird vegetal and almost spoiled milk backdrop. A little bit of vinegar. The flavor is not as sweet, sour, or vinegary as I was expecting. Really a pretty approachable Flemish Sour for most. There is an unwelcome sugariness late on in the finish, almost saccharine like. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little cloying with fine fizzy carbonation. Another so-so Flemish Sour. Why does it seem that I like American Flemish Sours so much more?

Bottel. Average beige fizzy head that mostly diminished. Fair lacing. Clear sparkling body with a reddish-brown colour. Aroma of graps and berry. Hint of citrus. Heavy sweet malty notes. Vinegar and some notes of wood. Even notes of wine like bouquet. Medium bodied with a lively carbonation and light dry texture. So well balanced between the moderated sweet and sour notes. Lovely light acidic finish. Wow that was good!

Bottle. Absolutely beautiful rich brown color with a tiny creamy off-white head. Pleasant aroma: oak, sour cherries, red wine. Slightly disappointed in the flavor, though. Not as complex and much slower to develop that the Duchesse. Nice representation of its style, though.

Poured ruby in color with a very thin head. Had a spicy/sweet aroma. Had a spicy palate with some type of vinegar taste. Had a sour flavor along with some fruits that I couldn’t put a finger on. Very unique taste to say the least.

330ml bottle. Fruity, sweet and properly sour aroma, acetic and featuring hints of black cherry, apple cider, light brown sugar, ash and an herbal, woody tinge. Deep ruby-brown color, lightly cloudy with a fine, lasting head and some really spectacular lacing. Flavor profile is likewise sweet and sour, vinous and sugary, balanced fairly well with one another from start to finish, along with some faint tannic oak, tobacco, tangy dark fruit and some cellar must. Mouthfeel is smooth and slick with a light-medium body. Held my interest.
