Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

What a delicious brew. Pours very dark crimson with a bubbly tan head that has decent retension and lacing. The aroma has wood, cherries, sourness and musty mothballs ~ and somehow that is fine. Medium / light body that is fairly crisp with soft frothy carbonation - smoother than normal for the style. Flavors start with cherries that are lightly sweet, yet crisp. There are woody notes, creamy malt and light citric qualities. The finish is clean and smooth cherries with bits of peppery spice. This is a great beer, if this beer (or style) was a lower price I’d drink it all summer long. Thumbs up for this clean and refreshing ale.

Big cherry nose, oaky and bold. Color is a rusty brown. Not as aggressve on the palate as you might think, fairly mild but throughly satisfying. Great beer for a hot Florida summer.

Bottled. Pours a clear, deep reddish brown with a lacy off-white head. Medium-light body and medium carbonation. Aroma of vinegar and cherries. Sweet-tart cherry taste leading to a dry finish.

bottle from uto. Deep mahogany with a huge rocky tan head. Purdy. Muted nose of raspberries and yeast. Tastes like smarties (the fruit variety, not chocolate). Tart berries, black cherries and a bit of balsamic in there too. Spritely palate. Really nice, but all in all fairly standard.

I have to revisit this beer but I remember it being more acetic than the Duchesse. Page 478 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide. On a blind taste test of some of the best Flanders ales at Chateau Webb outside Cambridge this was the best sorry Duchesse.

A dark clear brown ale with a thick light moka head. A pleasant cherry aroma, with dark balsam vinegar concentrate, and sangria. In mouth, a sweetish drink, with loads of cherries and gapes, but not as sour and puckering as I expected. Thin for the style. I prefer my Rodenbach Grand Cru! Bieropholie private import, late 2005. BB 13-10-06.

The color was a rusty/red. The head was fizzy and off-white. The aroma was sour, fermented fruit, dry wine, and maybe a little bit yeast. The flavor was wonderful. It was very tart with hints of fermented fruit. The palate was smooth and very lightly carbonated. The finish was slightly warm.

Pours a ruby brown brew with a generous tan head. The aroma and flavor are both upfront tart and sour. The aroma imparts some muscadine grape and mellowed cherry. The flavor also shows the cherry and leaves your eyes squinted. The palate is very crisp and carbonated, but also very aggressive and almost harsh (in the best possible way). Overall, this style seems like it would be very polarizing, you would either really like it or really hate it. Tried a bottle of this after having it for a couple of months and it became much mellower, rounder, and smoother. Much better on the mouthfeel.
