Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Served at about 58 degrees in a goblet. Pours a clear dark red, with off-white small head that dissipitates quickly and then maintains itself at a low level. Aroma of sour berries with an acetic edge, suble oakiness. Flavor is big and hard hitting, with sour fruit, acidity and acetic notes dominating. Mouthfeel is initially thin, but a foamy carbonation gives it a larger feel. Finish is a very dry sourness. These beers are crazy but I love them.

Reddish brown, cloudy, off white head, sour aroma, flavor is much the same, very sour, assaulting your taste buds in a good way, with notes of cherries. Sour finish.

Frothy off-white head, reddish clear brown body. Peppery oak in taste. My taste buds are messed up I think. Sweet sugary sour cherries.

11.2oz bottle, bb 12-10-06. Served right from the 50° cellar in a NB worthy glass. Dark red color, small khaki head. Aroma of tart berries, oak, vanilla (the last two in appropriate levels) and tart citrus. Initial taste of tart rasperries followed by red wine vinegar, lemon, and mild oaky notes. Very balanced sourness and acidity makes for a very refreshing beer. Very nice.

syrupy pour. medium sized tan head. caramel aroma. weird slow moving bubbles that group together(i can’t really explain this). mildly sour. chocolate and caramel blended with sour grape, apple flavors. this is definitely an odd one. head is thick and gelatinous. the body has a thick, gooey consistency. i’ve never had anything this full bodied before. can’t get into it.

[bottle] Pours a dark brown/ruby color with a short, off-white head. Aroma of apple cider vinegar, and a bit of oak. Flavors are tart, with big time vinegar, apple and sour grape elements. Nice balance of sweet and sour, but not too intense on either end. Oak barely comes through towards the finish. A pretty tasty Flemish sour, though not too complex. I think this would make a good introduction into the style.

Pours chesnut brown with a thick tan head. Sour cherry aroma, wood. Sweetly malty upfront, mild sourness, some woody notes. The sweetness almost becomes to much by the end of the 331ml bottle. Thick mouthfeel. Still, a fairly good flemish sour ale.

This sour ale lacks punch. The pour is medium brown with no head. Aromas are of sourness, fruits, and some acidity. Palate is too thin and watery for sure. Tastes are mostly fruity--apple like--but not very sour at all.
