Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Pours a deep, dark ruby with clarity; head is canvas colored, small, and fizzy that diminishes into a smaller head with minimal lacing. Sour smell is noticed immediately; apple cider vinegar, currant, cherry, and raisin noted with a slight oakiness. Flavor is dominated by the apple cider vinegar flavor but with also raisin, and a light caramel touch far in the background. Finishes still tart and sour but now with a minimal hop bitterness and slight oak. Palate is fizzy, medium-light, and refreshing. My first flemish sour, quite interesting and intriguing and like no other beer. Not something I would want to drink too often, but every once in a while just for the entertaining qualities.

Bottle, 25 cl. Red-brown color, light tan head. Fruity aroma. Medium apparent sweetness. Complicated beer. Like the Duchesse more.

bottle, from the Foodery. pours ruby-brown with a khaki head. sour aroma, with hints of yeast and cherry. Not as sour as most examples of the style; finish is actually fairly sweet. Not the most complex Flemish sour I’ve tried, but it’s very refreshing and enjoyable nonetheless.

Aroma of balsamic vinegar, with some over-ripe cherry notes. Appears a deep red mahogany-tinged color, with a big creamy tan head that lasts. Flavor is tart but not too sour, with some sweet over-ripe fruit in the middle, and ending with woody notes. Palate is moderate, slick, and effercescent. Overall, an excellent example. My thanks to SoLan for this tasty brew.

Poured with little head into a snifter. Powerfully sour, fruity aroma. Ketchup comes to mind, but then there’s some raisin-y and malty smells, too. Color is dark brown with ruby-red highlights. Taste is surprisingly dry and body is surprisingly light for such a powerfully sweet aroma. Sourness is quite present, but not overwhelming. Very pleasant and refreshing, but this is still a sipping beer. The malts nicely balance out the low-level hop bitterness and slight alcohol tinge at the end. This beer further reinforces my feeling that the Belgians in general, and Brouwerij Verhaeghe in particular, can brew no wrong. Superb, really. I can see this going very well with food.

Reddish-bronze clear body and a soapy, light tan head. Oakiness comes through and a fruity, cherry malt quality emerges as it warms. Medium-high apparent sweetness and medium acidity. Good stuff.

So, I am new to the Flemish beer scene, but I figured I would give this a try. Tastes tart, but not as tart as some of the few flemish beers I have had so far. Poured dark ruby in color with a small head that lasted with good lacing. Tasted of a tart fruit of some sort, but I cannot place it.

11.2oz, Best before 07-07-07. Pours a clear deep reddish brown with a one finger creamy beige head. Aroma is quite yeasty and acidic with stale lemons is the first thing that comes to mind. There are some underlying fig tones as well. There is also some oak, weak caramel and cherry. The flavor is actually sweeter than what I had expected--almost mapley--but there is some tart acidity at the same time. Quite balanced, though I think this leans a little towards the sour. The tartness seems to be more musty lemons that stale in taste. This one is rich that even one may possibly be too much. Medium bodied and would be creamy except that the carbonation interferes--even though it is only moderately carbonated. A good beer, though I don’t think I’d try it again.
