Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Bottle (330ml). Clear deep burnt copper with a decent foamy/rocky off-white head. Lovely sour aroma, solid caramelized brown sugar backbone, serious quantities of sour cherry, grape - all sorts of pungent darker fruits, nic yeast - boy this is a lovely nose, I could just wish it a TAD more robust. The taste is a bit weak, actually - nice prune and sour raisin, hints of sour cherry and malt vinegar, but this is mostly thick, sweet caramel/brown sugar malt, some spice and yeast, not near the funk promised by the aroma. Nice thick body, lightl carbonation and a very quick finish - really, it smells great, but more sourness, please...

Pours a nice tree brown with a medium off white head. The smell reminds me of sour cherries sitting around in an oak barrel. Very easy to drink. Mostly oak flavored with some tart apple and cherry fruit flavor. Not a sour as the other flemish sour I had, but just as good. I think I’m falling in love with this style, maybe it reminds me of SweetTarts.

Poured a nice red-brown color with an average white head. Aroma was sour cherryish and a little winey. Flavor was sweet and sour but just not my style. A little tart. Not very apetizing at first but it grew on me.

Vichtenaar pours a deep ruby mixed with brown topped by a foamy tan head. A layer of froth remained throughout the tasting, leaving nice lacing on the glass. The first aromatic impression is of sourness, but this quickly mellows. Nose of sherry, oozing ripe triple creme, sweat, apples, and vanilla from the oak no doubt. One is reminded of bouquets featured in some lambics. This is one of those beers you’d be content to nose for half an hour. On the palate the beer is like silk. Medium to full bodied with an excellent balance of sweet, sour, and tart acidity. The latter comes in the form of fruity suggestions of dark cherry and maybe blackberry. The beer finishes crisply and with a minor metallic tinge. The only real complaint I can muster is that I wish the duration was greater. Fortunately, the beer is only 5%, so it’s safe to have another, A terrific beer all around!

Bottled. Dark amber coloured, small beige head. Sour grape and cherry aroma, almost red-wineish. Flavour is sour grapefruit, cherry, apple and some vanilla. Almost like a more sour Madeira-wine. Some wooden hints also all the way through as it gets warmer. Redwineish aftertaste. Wellbalanced, but sadly a quite thin palate.

Pours a reddish/grape color. Has a oak and grape aroma. I’m glad I did not chill this too much cause it has a great complex flavor. Starts off almost like a wine. Berries, green apple skin and juicy red grapes with a lingering vanilla taste. Has a soft Madiera quality that I find in high quality barely wines. Lightly aciditic/sour on the palette. Also notes of iron and oakiness.

Bottle. Poured reddish brown with a large frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sour tart fruit aroma. Light to medium body. Medium sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish. Smooth refreshing brew.
