Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

11.2-oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a small frothy tan head, becomes edgy. Aroma is sour berries, malt (meal, cereal) yeast (dough, earth), nutty, perfumey alcohol. Medium sweet berries, candied sugars, malty and nutty, light caramel and yeast. Medium bodied and smooth, lightly fizzy palate.

Very vinegar and oak dominated aroma that both play off each other to effect a sharp spiciness. Body is a mild brown and holds a diminishing pinky thin tan head. Fore is suprinsgly malty sweet with just a hint of sourness. Has a hearty maltiness to it I did not expect. Sorta like a standard English brown Ale with some funk added. even has a very mild nuttiness to it...though sweeter than a normal brown. The finish is almost bread puddingesque being sweet yet hearty and midly toasty. Big suprise and I rather enjoy this one. Faint hints of vanilla in the far aftertaste.

Poured a red-brown that almost had a touch of burgundy-purple edges. Head was thin, but held steady while the beer lasted - also provided great lacing that didn’t seem possible from such a small head that maintained itself. Aroma was a bit vinegarish with tart cherries coming through. Flavor was complex and interesting. Started tart-like with cherries and apples leading the way. It then transitioned to somewhat of an oak/wood flavor over top of the sour fruits, and finally finished with a sweetness that was not expected. Mouthfeel is moderate and the light carbonation comes out strongest in the mid-flavors. I like this one.

Bier rouge: Red brown with little white head. The carbonation is lively. The aroma and taste is sour/sweet from vinegar/oak and cherries. Easy to taste that this is from the same brewery as Duchesse de bourgogne. Great!

This dark brown ale poured with a modest pinkish tan head. The initial flavor is sweet and fruity (cherry) with a malty finish. A sweet version of sour brown ale. It is obvious that great care was taken to ensure that this complex ale is an authentic oud bruin.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. In a snifter. Reddy brown with a thin white head. Extremely fruity aroma, sweet with wood and malt vinegar. To taste this is extremely sweet, almost oversweet with heavy woody character, is rather tart and sour with notes of sherbet, cider and vomit. A touch of astringency. This is too sweet for my taste and the oak character is overdone and verges on sickly.

Pours a nice dark clear crimson. Lots of carbonation, head is very small and fizzy. Vinous aroma, cherries and maybe some oak in there too. Taste begins innocently with a round fruitiness, of course highlighted by cherries. Oaken notes take a background role, could use slightly more. Somewhat mild acidity compared to La and Panil. Light yeastiness leaves a nice raw touch to the flavor, nice. Finish is tart, light puckering, lingering fruity sweetness. Slight metallics. Overall, needs to be just a touch more acidic and less fruity. Still a fine example of the style.
