Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

A great starter if you are new to the Flemish Sour styles. Fruit in the aroma, raspberries, malt, acidic. Pours a dark red almost purple. Mild sour flavor, some berry fruitiness, tart. A good session sour if there is such a thing.

12 oz bottle. Deep, ruby coloured brew, thick off-white head. Light sweet, fruity aroma. Strawberry and cherry fruit, light oakiness with some light tartness. Flavour is fairly sweet but still good, cherry, light woody character. Faint vanilla flavours behind the fruit and oak. A bit too sweet and the tartness is somewhat more subdued than I like. Finishes fairly sugary with some unpleasant metallic flavours. Could be much better.

Smells a little sour. A nice reddish color. It seems to have some faint cherry flavor, and easily the lightest and smoothest Flemish sour I"ve had. Quite nice, almost lambic-like.

Bottled. (BB 050517) Clear, dark, dark red with a diminishing, small head. Lovely vinous, fruity-sour aroma with cherries and some dried fruits. Flavor is quite mild and pleasant. Sour, fruity cherry-dominated beer. An astringent bitterness finishes it off. (060108)

Weird stuff. Powerful, and not unpleasant aroma of balsamic vinegar and raisins. Dark red color and nearly still. Sweet, rotting fruit combined with sour vinegar in the flavor. One of the thickest and most heavy beers I have had. Not as light and fruity as their Duchesse De Bourgogne, but also a good beer that requires more time than its lighter cousin.

I like this style. THe nose is fruity almost sour. Pours a dark, dark red with very little head. The flavor is aged fruit, balsamic with a sour finish. Not for everybody but a great style of beer.

Very pretty ruby/violet colored with a small, wispy and quickly diminishing head of white foam. Vibrant aroma, strange smelling, with hints of barbeque sauce, ranch, balsamic vinegar and grapes. Body is very thin and one dimensional and it can’t decide if it wants to be sweet or sour. A totally dull red, lacking complexity.
