Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Clear and bright red with a big loose pinkish head. Sour candy aroma with some floral hops and old milk. The tartness in the flavor is overwhelmed by the sweetness. Some oak in the caramel sweetness. Not bad.

Interesting aroma - berries, caramel and butterscotch, balsamic vinegar - like some kind of italian dessert. Clear ruby-brown color, decent sized tan head. Flavor matches the aroma with a little brett funk thrown in, however it is over-sweetened - almost tastes like it has high-fructose corn syrup in it. Full bodied, kind of syrupy. Not a bad beer, I just wish they didn’t sweeten it so much - it would be better if they let some more dryness and acidity come through.

Dark brown/ruby. Hissing bubbly, tan head disappears quickly. Wild yeast, fruit in the aroma. Sweet and sour with wild yeast and nice malt backbone, crisp hops, dark berries- very refreshing. Easy drinking medium body with some tingling carbonation. Very good.

12oz bottle stamped 11/27/2005. Clear dark brown body under a dense tan head which leaves thick, solid sheets of lacing. Very assertive dopplebock-like aroma. It has a dark raspberry/plum malts wrapped up in a fruity yeast with oak providing a drying background element. Chocolate creaminess as well. The emphasizes the fruity parts of the aroma but now they’re NOT dopplebock-like just straight-up raspberries and blackberries with oak and aged leafy hops offsetting the sweetness. The flemish sour tartness appears in the finish but it balances the sweetness rather than provides a leading flavor element. Both the aroma and flavor do remind me of cough syrup but only in the tastinest way! I always did like the stuff. Creamy medium mouthfeel with the faintest carbonation zip. This stuff is a worthy alternative to Rodenbach Alexander. Delicious and underrated.

bottle. this is my first flemish sour and i must say not bad at all. i have nothing to compare it to but not bad. pours very dark you can just see a deep ruby red when held to a light. thin off white head leaves some nice lacing. aroma is sour fruit and lightly yeasty. tastes great sweet and sour but not very strong. smooth carbonated mouthfeel very good.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown color with ruby highlights seen when backlit. Very nice, long-lived off-white head forms and leaves great lacing behind. Aroma is pleasantly sour with hints of sugary sweetness. Body is light and well carbonated. Flavor runs to the sweet side of things, slight tartness is present but just doesn’t really pack the punch of other Flemish Sours. Begins to get a bit medicinal towards the end of the glass. A mild example of the style. Fair.

Bottle. Mahoganey coloured with a slim off-white/light brown head. Very sour aroma; vinegar and cherries. Very nice, sweet, tart and sour taste. Lovely mouthfeel with an excellent dry finish. Excellent.

Dark mahoganey in color with a thick white pillowy cap. Balsamic vinegar prominent with a hint of vanilla and maple syrup aromas. Sharp smack of acidity followed by green apple flavors. Sweet and sour flavors meld into a pleasant dry finish.
