Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Bottle. Mahoganey coloured with a slim off-white/light brown head. Very sour aroma; vinegar and cherries. Very nice, sweet, tart and sour taste. Lovely mouthfeel with an excellent dry finish. Excellent.

Dark mahoganey in color with a thick white pillowy cap. Balsamic vinegar prominent with a hint of vanilla and maple syrup aromas. Sharp smack of acidity followed by green apple flavors. Sweet and sour flavors meld into a pleasant dry finish.

A Mes rate: Bottle @ Delirium Cafe. A good flemish sour. Fruity without the fruit if you will. Flavours are all over the place. Sweet cherries, bit of vinegar, lots of chocolate, red wine and some slight iron metalicness about it. One of those sweet and sour ones. Much more easy drinking than you would expect and the palate is superb. Its a complex chin stroker.

(Rating #266)

Real nice Flemish Sour. Aroma fruity(cherries) and sweet with a tad of vingear mixed in to for the sourness. This all fits in well with its mahgany color and moderate brown head. Flavor is a pleasant balance between the fruity sweetness and the sourness. In end the sourness rules the day. I think this beer should age really well and plan on cellaring a few bottles of it.

Bottle. Red-brown appearence with a dense head on its shoulders. A sweetish (cola-ish) and quite fruity flemish ale that is nicely balanced by the acidity. Hints of cherries and chocolate. Light on its feet and easy drinking. Thanks Papsoe

Deep reddish brown hue, with a good tan-colored head, with winey notes, oaky, wet wood, caramel malt, fruity cherry nose, follows through on a medium-bodied palate with sweet tart and sour flavor, good acidity, touch of pit cherry, tannic notes, oaky, fruity, even iron accent, leading to a very refreshing finish. A nice flanders red beer, my favorite style of beer.
