Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Bottle, at Carlsen’s Kvarter, Odense, august 2005. Sell-by date was 23.12. 2003! Typical Flemish sour ale. Very dark reddish brown colour. Red wine / balsamico vinegar aroma and flavour, some sweetness remains. Oaky elements.

Balsamic vinegar, wood, leather, molasses and sour sweat in the aroma. Clear dark reddish brown with low but lasting off-white head that recedes to lasting cover. Cherry, malt vinegar and caramel sweetness in the flavour with a surprising, strong woody bitterness in the dry finish. Strong carbonation and somewhat puckering astringency draw you through to the lasting sweet aftertaste. Light body remains quite dry despite the obvious sweetness. Tulip, allowed to warm from fridge temp. Bottle (Bieropholie, Jun-05).
Six months later, it is less astringent and the bitterness is less pronounced. Quite sweet, but it works very well. Perhaps a minor improvement.

First entry! What a great one to start with. The aroma hit instantly upon pouring. An immediate caramel, raisin, alcohol (yeah, they’re terms from the help option. Rookie!), aroma permeated. Color a nice deep reddish seen through the remaining broken head. Flavor tart, sour and caramel sweet all as it rolls over the tongue. But, mouthpuckering SOUR! Yummy. I’ll have another a little colder in the year.

Bottled, 250 ml, Bottle Conditioned. Dark and reddy. Nicely balanced Flemish Sour, hits the right acidity notes with sour fruits and burnt notes. Very enjoyable if a little challenging. Good stuff.

The first time I had this was at Ommegang Fest. and it stole the day. Hand down my favorite beer there. I had since bought a bottle and tried it at home and it rminded me a lot of the Duchesse De Bourgogne with a much tolerable finish. Not bad but definately not the beer I had in Cooperstown. I may re-rate.

(Bottled, BBE 09/2005) Clear, deep red color with a small and tight, beige head with lace. Tart and dry aroma with dried fruit. A flavor of sour cherries and sweetish malt with some oaky hints. Light to medium-bodied palate with fizzy and foamy carbonation. A bit watery and lemonadey flemish ale. Very nice-looking, though.

Bottled. A reddy purple beer with a nice white head and some lacing. The aroma starts off with quenching fruits which are noticeable from a few feet. Then a dry woodiness takes over. The taste is quite dry and twiggy. There is a compost heap finish. Sweetness sourness and dryness all make appearances. An endearing beer.
