Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Clear, reddish-bronze body and a soapy, light tan head. Big balsamic in the nose and flavor. There’s some serious acetobacter action here. Oakiness comes through and a fruity, cherry malt quality emerges as it warms. Some noticeable oxidation with a note of cardboard. Medium-high apparent sweetness and medium acidity. Good stuff.

Bottle. Brown to ruby color with a light laced foamy off-white head. Dark dates and cherry aroma with a cherry spiced candy flavor. A pleasant sour finish.

Dark amber color. Light nose, with some sweetness, candi sugar and sourness. The flavor is too simple, more deceiving, light mouthfeel, poorer than the other Verhaeghe...

Sampled at le Mondial de la bière 2005. Pours a reddish brown color with a thick, diminishing offwhite head that leaves beautifull lacing on the glass. Sour aroma and flavor of cherries, the sour is balanced by some sweetness, the finish is mild and sweet. The body is light, the texture oily and carbonation soft. Very good.

Pours a deep nut brown with hints of ruby, 1/4 inch khaki head with lots of fine lacing. Smell is fruity and sour. Tart cherrry and vinegar. Puckering and sweet. Lightly oaky with hints of vanilla. More sweet than sour. Could use a bit more sour to balance the sweet but lots of flavor. Full bodied with a lightly sour aftertaste. A pretty good Flanders red.

Brownish-red, big beige head. Aroma sour, fruity, funky. Flavor sour, fruity (cherries, plums, pomegranate,) funky, some oak. This is one where I don’t miss hops; enough is going on without them. Not full-bodied in a way that would involve heaviness, but thanks to the sourness it fills the mouth in a really nice way. I’m reminded again of why I became a beer geek.

Dark brown body with reddish glints and a thin off-white head. Sour/fruity aroma with some toffee and brown sugar notes. Taste is very well balanced and smoother than I was expecting. Some woody hints, and a respectable sour finish. Nice sour ale.

Calandro’s Supermarket, Baton Rouge, La., 11.2 oz bottle. Pours a dark crimson with a thin off white head. Sour aroma with a touch of vinegar and sour cherries. Flavor has an enticing, lip smacking sourness to it, reminding me of sour apple gum, old burgundy wine and vinegar. Very good "sourness" with good puckering flavor. Mouthfeel is excellent - puckers you up like a sour ale should.
