Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Pours a clear dark amber with a large off white head. Sour, spritzy aroma. Well carbonated body, sweet up front with a tart finish. Average.

Tart, sweet-and-sour nose, lots of dark fruit and some brown sugar and oak. Very sweet, yet the sourness balances it nicely. A great contrast of flavors. Fine stuff.

Pours a hazy amber red color with a small off white head. Nose mild, slightly tart, fruits, light cherry. Initial taste is creamy and sweet fruits, light citrus and cherries. Sour funk hides in the background lurking in for a split second. Mid palate displays some oak. Finishing sweet and light cherries with an average palate duration. Light bodied, above average head retention. Flavor was disappointingly one dimensional.

Bottle: Poured a deep hazy reddish color ale with a medium foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet cherries and light sour and oaky notes. Taste is also dominated by tasty oak notes with a light lingering sour note with some sweet cherries. I thought the bit was slightly overly sweet but oak notes were just about perfect, carbonation might have been a bit low. Well done.

Sampled a while back. Bottled. Had nice cherry notes, perhaps some vinegar flavors too. Good. Will look to try again soon

Lucious ruby-amber with big bubbles, but litttle carbonation. Piquant smells of cider and yeast, and notably, worcester sauce ooze from the glass. Strong apple cidery taste with musky sour notes and again some worcester. Drinkable, but not my thing.
