Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

sour apple aroma with a taste that is remarkably smooth leaving no lingering sour behind. Very nice.

Brewed in Belgium....... Courtesy of AFI96, thanks Waylo. Pours a dark garnet color with a small off white head. Aroma of cherry wine and candy. Taste is of tangy fruits, malts, and oak. The mouthfeel was very foamy and sweet. I was sadden to find out there was scarcely any sourness in this Flemish ale.

Pours dark reddish brown topped by a small khaki head. Smells of cherry candy, grapes, red wine. The taste isn’t as sour as I thought it would be, the sour is there but is backed by a lot of sweetness. Flavors of cherry, banana, and grape. Finishes with a grape Jolly Rancher flavor. Not as impressed as I was hoping but I could easily drink this sour all night.

12oz bottle from Greens Buford Hwy. Best before July 31st 2008. Pours dark amber with a small tan head. Sweet and sour. Kind of applely. More sweetness that I would expect out of a sour beer, but I get lactobacillus isn’t that alcohol tolerant and requires heat and long times, which is enough to create sourness, but maybe not enough to eliminate sweetness. Buttery slickness, that I used to interpret as diacetyl, but now I think this is barrel plus acidity.

Pours a brownish red with a thin white head. Sour vinegar aroma with a hint of cherry. Malty cherry sour taste, slightly puckering. Very complex and interesting, the flavors meld together really well and would have to be one of my favorites of the style mainly due to the drinkability. Finishes with just enough tartness to make you want to come back.

33cl bottle from Swann Avenue Market (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark cola brown with hints of red; thin white head that provides little lacing on the glass and disappears almost immediately. Aroma is sweet and sour with notes of brandy, vinegar, sour white grapes, and spices. Flavor is a complex blend of malts and spices with notes of soy, nuts, ripe tart fruit, vinegar, tart cherries, some hints of wood. Syrupy and sweet with a slightly tart, slightly sweet finish.

Deep brown with red highlights. Sour cherries and woody vinegar in the nose. Very clean fruit especially cherries in my first sip with the astringent quality coming in behind. My mouth is watering as I write, waiting for my next drink. A nice refreshing mouthfeel and a classic West Flanders. Similar in character to a fresher Goudenband. Like it alot.
