Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

I must have a bad bottle. Smells like raisins soaking in cider vinegar. The flavor is so strong with vinegar I did something I rarely do; drain pour. On a sour. Damn. I LOVE sour beers, but this tastes like absolute shit. The one positive is the color. This is one of the most beautiful beers I’ve seen. Deeeeeep mahogany. Wow....if only the aroma and tasted didn’t fall so short.

Pours an iced tea brown with thin white head. Aroma has loads of brett with sweet strawberry, balsamic, and a hint of caramel malt. Flavor is tart of cherry, yet sweet of strawberry and white grapes. Not as funky as I’d anticipated or hoped, but the tartness is pleasant.

Good looking brown beer with with a red glow, foam is off white in colour. Aroma is fruity with hints of caramel and appel. Taste is malty, slight sour, it has some wine characteristics and some soft roasted hints too.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a thin tan head, viscous, nice lacing... Aroma is quite vineous, with big notes of cherries and woodiness... Flavor is more complex with oak, cherry, vanilla, moderate tartness, vinegar... Sweet, with a dry finish, kind of lively, not very funky... Too Sweet for my tastes...

23rd July 2008. Clear dark red brown beer. Slightly sour in the Duchesse Du Bourgogne mode but this is tamer and much sweeter. Sweet and sour semi dry finish with some coca cola flavours. Refreshing.

I really loved this- tasting just like the Duchesse, this beer is thick, sugarry, and sour. Barnyard flavors- hey and earth, plums, wood. Bottle from Knightly Spirits, Orlando.

25cl bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours a chesnut brown colour with a reddish sheen. Beige long lasting head. Vinous nose. Aromas of sour cherries, toffee, strawberries. Quite tart. Flavours of sour cherries, red wine vinegar, stewed apples. Finishes fruity and sweet with only a hint of sourness. Excellent sour ale almost as good as Rodenbach’s wonderful grand cru.

Rustyham, thanks. Brown pour. Sour aroma with some red wine vinegar and some light sweet tart notes. Flavor has some sweet tarts for sure, cherries and berries.
