Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

The roasted malt aroma in this bottle smells wet, not like cardboard, but like low tide sand while clamdigging. Body looks thin, color grays on the edges. Burnt grain, too present alcohol, thin body and a biting finish. bleh

22 oz bottle **Aroma / Appearance** - A fluid black body was decorated by a one finger tan head. A clear sheen of lacing tickled the sides of the glass. Cocoa, black coffee, smoke, blackberries, and dark chocolate blended into a fusion of sweetness. Balanced and even it treats the senses to a great time. **Flavor / Palate** - Creamy black coffee with drops of hazel and a little skim milk trace across the tongue. A woody transition prepares the palate for a carbonated aftertaste. The dry finish leaves you wanting more. It is pretty close in spirit to Perkunos Hammer but yet maintains some individuality.

Blackish colored, moderate to large sized head with good lacing and retention. Aroma is very nutty with notes of chocolate, caramel, touches of roast and coffee. Fairly fruity as well. Medium bodied, decent balance. It still feels like "something" is lacking though, but I cannot quite pin it down.

Bottle from Sams. Nearly black pour without much carbonation. Very roasty nose; chocolate malts, toffee, coffee, a bit of vanilla. Added lactose on the taste as well as some subtle fruit notes. Slight bit of perfume (roses?) even. A bit thin taste and palate. Damn you, Duck-Rabbit, you have ruined me to other Baltics.

Bottle courtesy of sebletitje. Pours a clear dark brown amber with a one finger tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good.

Bottle. Chocolate, dark fruit, winey aroma, good roasted malt. Flavor is quite fruity, chocolately, a touch of coffee, with roasted malt but not really burnt. Mild, actually, rather sweet but well balanced, not a trace of alcohol. Very well done.

Aroma is rich and smoky, and has hints of coffee and molasses. Color is a barely translucent dark brown with a thick, tan, fairly persistent head. Flavor has quite a strong nip to it, like hard liquor. Other than that, it is somewhat typical of a good porter, like roast coffee with hints of molasses and unsweetened chocolate. Texture is smooth and tingly, very pleasant to swallow.
