Commercial Description:
While Heavyweight Brewing deserves credit for introducing the Baltic porter style to many craft beer fans, this beer from Victory represents an all new recipe fashioned on the experience of Tom's original intense brew. One noteworthy difference is the higher alcohol by volume of Baltic Thunder, 8.5% compared to Heavyweight's, which weighed in at 8%.

An additional distinction is Victory's use of black eyed peas in lieu of Roman beans. Despite these changes, this dark lager still features a reminiscent roasted character that embodies the fullness of toffee, along with subtle fruit flavors derived from its higher temperature fermentation. Long, cold aging tempers this complex beer into a well-rounded delight that warms with its significant alcohol strength. The final packaged product will be released in 25.4 fluid ounce bottles.

"The first brew of Baltic Thunder was magical. Tom and his original co-conspirator on the beer, Lew Bryson, even came here to Victory to assist. Then, while sharing a pint of Baltic Thunder off of the lagering tank a few weeks later with Tom, I swear the spirit of his departed Perkuno was smiling upon our accomplishment," continued Covaleski.

Dark brown color where light shines through...barely. Solid two-finger finger that dissipates slowly and leaves nearly no lace Mild aroma of soft semi-sweet chocolate; reminds me of fudgesickle. Smooth, nearly perfect body. The carbonation is spot on and the brew is creamy. The flavor has all of the classic porter flavors--coffee, cream, dark chocolate. Great aftertaste of unsweetened espresso. Despite the abv, this has no alcohol warmth in the taste. That might give you an idea of the level of flavoring. This is another great offering from Victory.

alcohol aroma and nuts. Pours opaque black, thin head. Smoky, sweet and nutty. Oily, but smooth mouthfeel. A solid brew.

Black pour with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and toffee. Mild carbonation, creamy, smooth. Taste of roasted malt, semi-sweetness. Nice aftertaste of flavors. The head went down quick, but the taste was really good from start to finish.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate, toffee, and a little smoke. Flavor has a nice bitter touch at the end, but for the most part it is fairly sweet. A little smokey, this is fairly good.

Deep violet clear body with a sufficient small bubbled creamy off white head. Aromas of charcoal, raisin, butterscotch, plum, and caramel. Very distinct. Mmm, a nice smoky flavor with a bite in the finish. Quite unique and pretty good beer. If I didn’t know this was a baltic porter, I would have sworn I was drinking a smoked porter.

aroma is nutty, savory. mix of roasted chestnuts and sturdy roasted malt imparting big chocolate notes. flavor is upfront cocoa that fades to wonderful fruits: blackberries, grapes, black cherries. moves further to sweet alcohol note to close things out. nearly still beer with only a tiny island of film floating in a baltic sea of blackened oil slick. a bit too much cocoa for a baltic porter of my personal like but extremely drinkable and complex none the less.

22oz bottle. Dark brown with a small head of light beige. Clean, lagerish aroma with some chocolate, dried sugar cane, and coconut. Clean chocolatey flavor with modest hops and restrained sweetness. Not very complex, just a really nice chocolate lager. Alcohol is nowhere to be found but the body does hint at robustness, though not too much. Very drinkable, almost like a regular strength black lager, but with a more intense malt flavor. Add another one to Victory’s tasty lager lineup.

Pours a clear brownish copper color, rather light for a porter. After one sniff it’s immediately clear that this porter is a lager. Very clean scent with cocoa, dark chocolate, and a touch of smoke. Flavor is a little muted. Dark bread crusts and cocoa, with a crisp and clean finish. Drinks like a schwarzbier despite the high alcohol, which is imperceivable. Nice but needs more complexity and robustness.
