ChainGangGuy (1602), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 3, 2007 Alright, folks, I finally did it. Trying a new tripel torments the hell out of me, as its a style I either love or hate entirely, and most tripels ending up lumped into the latter group. I had put off sampling Golden Monkey for as long as possible until yesterday, while at Highlands Grill in Kennesaw, I decided to finally "go for it".
Appearance: Pours a hazy, pale golden body with a foamy, white head that went completely flat within a minute or so.
Smell: Spice-driven aromatics, with hints of flowers, mold, bananas, and grains.
Taste: Spicy from the onset, with generous doses of pepper, clove, and corriander. Other weak flavors erratically flash across the tongue: lemon juice, sweetened dough, dusty-dry yeast, and bananas. Lightly bitter finish with just a murmur from the alcohol showing on the swallow.
Mouthfeel: Thin-bodied and watery. Lightly carbonated.
Drinkability: I did not care for this one at all, as its excessive spiciness, as well as its array of weak, uninteresting flavors was a complete turn off for me. Pass.
thooper41 (231), USA Oct 6, 2008 12oz bottle: pours a hazy golden brown with quick fading white head, aroma of belgian pale malt, flavor is pretty close to the style but has this after taste i cant get over its like a stale taste. good beer other than that and cheaper than buying a true belgian and i get .8 more oz. tubehead (10), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 5, 2008 One of my favorites - it is a truly American spin on the classic Tripel - it is beautiful light yellow color with the aroma of spice (ginger, notably) right out of the bottle. It is a very zesty brew with a slightly sweet aftertaste. It pours slightly hazy with a medium head. Victory keeps ’em coming - another fine beer from a strong pedigree. zootfinster (158), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 4, 2008 Hazy yellow with a medium white head, Very spicy with a lot of raison taste, Aroma is quite spicy. a very enjoyable triple, Alcohol noticable but not overwhelming Svesse (1811), Hässelby, Sweden Oct 4, 2008 (Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 26 Sep 2008) Golden colour, slightly hazy, with frothy off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with tropical fruit, pineapple and spices. Malty, fruity taste with lots of tropical fruit and notes of spices (ginger and clove). On the sweet side but a decent tripel. DSG (867), Yuvalim, Israel Oct 3, 2008 Bottle at the Dancing Camel brewery. Thanks David Cohen for sharing this! Slightly hazy golden-colored with a medium white head. Fruity aroma with some tropical fruits, some yeast and a nice hoppy touch. Sweetish flavor with a bit of malt, some fruits and a rather big spiciness (quite a bit of coriander). A dry finish with fair bitterness and a bit of alcohol. Medium-bodied. Not bad but not my cup of tea.
