Commercial Description:
Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop headed West a broken man. For it was a certain Miss LuLubelle Lager that had left him, thirsting for more. Drawn by wild tales of the riches of the gold mines, Hop pressed on westward. His last nickel spent on a prospecting pan, Hop's hunger and thirst got the best of him. Two fistfuls o' barley and three of some wild and wayward hops tossed in the pan with some clear water was to be his meal. But sleep overcame him and he woke to a bubbling, cacophonous concoction. Overjoyed with the beautiful ale that he had made, Hop realized the secret of the 'green gold' he had discovered in those fresh hops. Celebrated far and wide, Hop Wallop lives on in this vivid ale with his words, "hoppiness is happiness." As our annual homage to the fresh hop harvest, Hop Wallop is a fragrant experience that delights the tastebuds. Pure gold of color, this ale offers its heady bounty of hops to the adventurous of taste. Bold, bracing and surprisingly refreshing for a strong (8.5% a.b.v.) ale, Hop Wallop lives up to its name and legacy.

Pours a clear orange with a small white head that quickly dissipates to a spotty lacing. Hops aroma is present, but faint for an IPA, especially a double. Flavor is hops bitterness on the front, then blooming into floral and citrus notes with honey sweetness thrown in, finishes with bubblegum and some almost Belgian-style yeasty elements. Medium bodied, very creamy palate, nice hops burn and carbonation.

Poured a hazy orange/straw color. Decent head that died down quick but left lots of lacing. Aroma was great and made me really excited for this brew. Tons of hop bitterness with citrus thown in. I wish it had more malt backbone. While decent and I wouldn’t turn it down it was expensive for the taste.

appearance is pretty light for the style and crystal clear. mouthfeel is similarly easy going. aroma is an immediate bundle of fruits, leaning more towards sweet then acidic: peach and possibly mango. flavor however is pure grapefruit, the acidic sweetness is dead on and the hop bitterness is just like a freshly salted grapefruit at 8am. amazing!

12oz bottle. Can’t read best by date, something something 09. Pours a cloudy golden color with a small swirly white head. Aroma is restrained but pleasant hoppiness, strong malt background, intense vanilla. Slightly oxidized hop quality though not too bad. Vanilla is predominate aroma. Very malty IIPA, more like a little Barley Wine. Taste is smooth, citrusy, tangerine, mildly bitter. Medium body. Drinkable for the ABV. Not too sweet. Smooth. This is all right, I think it’s a pretty good beer though I don’t know how much of a IIPA it is. I don’t know how to categorize it but it needs to be a litle hoppier I think. Not bad though.

Nice bitterness. The Hop Wallop has a mellow grapefruit flavor. It is smooth and easy-drinking for am IPA, even more so for an imperial.

This beer never really worked for me. I bought a 24 on my way back from Pennsylvania expecting yet another great Victory brew. I should have gone for Weyerbacher’s Double Simcoe IPA instead. The beer is definitely drinkable, but not always enjoyable. It pours with a deep, clear gold. The aroma is citrusy, energetic and quite inviting. The hops have a biting soap flavour that sticks to the tongue and induces squinting. The hops completely override any other notable qualities in the beer -- not inherently a bad thing, but in this case it is. I’ve had IPAs both bitterer and less cringe-worthy than Hop Wallop.

12oz bottle. Pours a golden with a one fingered head that has a very long retention. Carbonation is constantly flowing. Smell is as expected with huge hops along with citrus and pine. Taste is not nearly the wallop I was expecting. Hops are mellow and balanced. Alcohol is well hidden. Very impressive. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, medium carbonation.
