Commercial Description:
Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop headed West a broken man. For it was a certain Miss LuLubelle Lager that had left him, thirsting for more. Drawn by wild tales of the riches of the gold mines, Hop pressed on westward. His last nickel spent on a prospecting pan, Hop's hunger and thirst got the best of him. Two fistfuls o' barley and three of some wild and wayward hops tossed in the pan with some clear water was to be his meal. But sleep overcame him and he woke to a bubbling, cacophonous concoction. Overjoyed with the beautiful ale that he had made, Hop realized the secret of the 'green gold' he had discovered in those fresh hops. Celebrated far and wide, Hop Wallop lives on in this vivid ale with his words, "hoppiness is happiness." As our annual homage to the fresh hop harvest, Hop Wallop is a fragrant experience that delights the tastebuds. Pure gold of color, this ale offers its heady bounty of hops to the adventurous of taste. Bold, bracing and surprisingly refreshing for a strong (8.5% a.b.v.) ale, Hop Wallop lives up to its name and legacy.

This beer never really worked for me. I bought a 24 on my way back from Pennsylvania expecting yet another great Victory brew. I should have gone for Weyerbacher’s Double Simcoe IPA instead. The beer is definitely drinkable, but not always enjoyable. It pours with a deep, clear gold. The aroma is citrusy, energetic and quite inviting. The hops have a biting soap flavour that sticks to the tongue and induces squinting. The hops completely override any other notable qualities in the beer -- not inherently a bad thing, but in this case it is. I’ve had IPAs both bitterer and less cringe-worthy than Hop Wallop.

12oz bottle. Pours a golden with a one fingered head that has a very long retention. Carbonation is constantly flowing. Smell is as expected with huge hops along with citrus and pine. Taste is not nearly the wallop I was expecting. Hops are mellow and balanced. Alcohol is well hidden. Very impressive. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, medium carbonation.

bottle into snifter. Great hoppy aroma and flavor that has been balanced well with a sturdy malt backbone, but not overly malty like many IIPAs. Mostly bitting piney hops. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall: very solid hop bomb thats outstandingly drinkable.

Bottle at the Coffee Table Lounge. Not so sure about this one. I remembered this being very dark when on tap at Stone last year and very nicely citric. This wasn’t. It was sharp, but not clear like an AleSmith. A little dirty and not more than dark orange. It may not have been a fresh bottle.

Tropical aroma, though not as sticky as others. Clear golden, minimal head. Hops are there but not strong or bright.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear golden amber with a nice, fluffy off-white head. Nose is of grass and pine hops. Taste is pine hops with some soapiness to it. Sweet caramel malt is in there, but totally overpowered by the hops. definitely not a balanced brew. Mouthfeel is almost puckering from the mighty bitter bite. Lots of carbonation as well. Potent stuff.

Pours a nearly clear light copper with an orangish hue, a creamy off white head, and a moderate amount of lacing.... Aroma of citrjus, smells a bit creamy, vanilla??? Tastes of pine, and citrus with very little maltiness... Way too out of balance for my tastes... Medium bodied, not creamy, finishes with lingering pine and citrus notes.... every year i open a bottle of this with the glimmer of hope that they will have recreated the magical beer that i had on cask at the brewpub the day this beer was first introduced... I fear that beer wont ever exist again.... (also, when this was first introduced years ago i was convinced that this was a crazily hopped pilsener in reference to the few people who have posted about the lager similarities)

Bottle. Light golden pour with little head. Smells more like a heavily hopped lager than a IIPA. Sweet malt flavor upfront with some citrus and pine hop notes. A dry, bitter finish. Not really what I was expecting; may be why I found it disappointing.
