Commercial Description:
Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop headed West a broken man. For it was a certain Miss LuLubelle Lager that had left him, thirsting for more. Drawn by wild tales of the riches of the gold mines, Hop pressed on westward. His last nickel spent on a prospecting pan, Hop's hunger and thirst got the best of him. Two fistfuls o' barley and three of some wild and wayward hops tossed in the pan with some clear water was to be his meal. But sleep overcame him and he woke to a bubbling, cacophonous concoction. Overjoyed with the beautiful ale that he had made, Hop realized the secret of the 'green gold' he had discovered in those fresh hops. Celebrated far and wide, Hop Wallop lives on in this vivid ale with his words, "hoppiness is happiness." As our annual homage to the fresh hop harvest, Hop Wallop is a fragrant experience that delights the tastebuds. Pure gold of color, this ale offers its heady bounty of hops to the adventurous of taste. Bold, bracing and surprisingly refreshing for a strong (8.5% a.b.v.) ale, Hop Wallop lives up to its name and legacy.

Clear, light gold colored pour with a small, short-lived, white head. Sweet citrus and honey aroma with hints of pine. The flavor is very piny and floral. Especially lingering on the back of the tongue. There’s some notable sweetness and grapefruit that hits your tongue first and fades, then leaving a lasting bitterness. The middle of the flavor is somewhat artificial and soapy which is a little off-putting. I think it’s coming from a big dose of fusel alcohol. There’s some nice hop notes in there but it’s just way out of balance. The body is also a bit on the thin side and heavy on the carbonation.

Golden body, medium head. Citrusy body of plantain, grapefruit and orange, lighty floral through the creamy mouthfeel, blast of hops comes through the long finish.

( 12 oz bottle thanks to mar) pours golden hazy with nice fluffy head and good lacing. Nose of earth, floral/spicy hops and a honey back. Some alcohol too. Taste of crisp hops, earth, soapy and grass. Lingers of some hot alcohol, dirt, and a decently balanced hop/malt combo.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy fine to medium sized bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a transparent typically carbonated light yellow-orange colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The strong aroma was hoppy and dirty sock. The thick mouth feel was very tingly at the start and at the finish. The strong flavor contained notes of hops and caramel. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.

Massive pine oil and oak aromas, bitter and flowery. Toasted Bavarian malts. Bittersweet. Appearance is a surprising straw yellow. Nice frothy head. Thin sheet of lace. Color is weak, but the head/lace is nice. Hops totally overwhelm the flavor, but as it warms up, those German malts rise up to meet the challenge. The hops are extreme but ultimately balanced. Major bite in the aftertaste. The feel is thick and rich; creamy and not bubbly, praise Jesus. Overall it’s unbelievably hoppy, but does ultimately offer some balance.

Golden color with a frothy head. Big juicy hop aroma and big bold hop flavor. Very strong in body, taste and hops and alcohol. Some pine and citrus and very slick mouthfeel.

Location: Cask at Swift Hibernian Lounge, 9/14/09
Part of the Gotham Cask Festival

Aroma: Nice hoppy nose of grapefruit, citrus, and a bit of a woodiness to it as well
Appearance: Clear golden color
Flavor: Relatively balanced, nice bitter, grapefruit hoppiness, some oak/vanilla flavor, and a little crystal malts too
Palate: Medium body, nice mouthfeel, very smooth, a bit of an alcohol bite in there too
Overall Impression: I know I’ve had this beer before, but I’ve never rated it, so drinking it on cask is as good a time as any. I swung by Swift the day after the Cask festival ended, and this was the last thing they had left on Cask. Quit a nice beer, and the cask treatment seems to have done this one well. Pretty much what I remembered, plus just a little bit of oak thrown in. A really nice DIPA that worked quite nicely on cask!

[355ml bottle from Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbott] My first ever big DIPA outside of a theme park (ho ho). Pours a pale, fizzy-looking gold with a good, lasting creamy head. Strangely there’s little fizz in the mouth, which is fine by me. Lovely fresh hoppy, sweet pine aroma. Tastes of lime, white pepper and pine. Was expecting it to be horribly bitter; it is slightly (although not much) more bitter than I like, but this is necessary to cut through the rather syrupy mouthfeel. Leaves a prolonged a delicious hoppy aftertaste. I must admit, I wasn’t expecting to like this style; I only bought this beer so I could say at least I’ve tried a DIPA. Having tried it, I’m quite intrigued and would like to try more. So, a successful beer I reckon!
