Commercial Description:
Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop headed West a broken man. For it was a certain Miss LuLubelle Lager that had left him, thirsting for more. Drawn by wild tales of the riches of the gold mines, Hop pressed on westward. His last nickel spent on a prospecting pan, Hop's hunger and thirst got the best of him. Two fistfuls o' barley and three of some wild and wayward hops tossed in the pan with some clear water was to be his meal. But sleep overcame him and he woke to a bubbling, cacophonous concoction. Overjoyed with the beautiful ale that he had made, Hop realized the secret of the 'green gold' he had discovered in those fresh hops. Celebrated far and wide, Hop Wallop lives on in this vivid ale with his words, "hoppiness is happiness." As our annual homage to the fresh hop harvest, Hop Wallop is a fragrant experience that delights the tastebuds. Pure gold of color, this ale offers its heady bounty of hops to the adventurous of taste. Bold, bracing and surprisingly refreshing for a strong (8.5% a.b.v.) ale, Hop Wallop lives up to its name and legacy.

Bottle. Pours a transluscent orangey yellow with a fluffy head. Aroma seems to be of peaches and pink grapefruit. Flavors are similar with a lot of flavoring hops. Finish is rather bitter with a slight sour funk edge to it. Aftertaste is a bit on the metallic side for some queer reason.

12oz bottle courtesy of Cavie poured into a snifter. The pour is hazy golden yellow with a soapy white head. This one is hard to explain and find the right words... the aroma is spicy but sour... it’s clean but funky... the flavor is big sweet malts with a touch of sour that reminds of Belgian beers. The finish is somewhat bitter and dry. The body is big but it has very high carbonation for the style.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a frothy, moderate head. Carbonation is intense, but this adds to the bitterness of the hops. Aroma is pungent and biting. Hints of citrus and earth tones. Obviously, the beer is extremely hoppy, but I enjoy a strong hops-filled brew. FInish is smooth, almost creamy. Very good beer.

12oz bottle from total wine in norfolk. pours a clean, clear, gold with a half inch, bright white head, and drippy lace. aroma is very nice with fresh hop notes of orange, pine esters, grass, and mild floral notes with a touch of caramel malt sweetness. flavor follows the aroma nicely with big, citrus hops up front followed by drier notes of grass and pine and backed by mild, nutty malts. palate is medium bodied with moderate bitterness, solid carbonation, and well hidden 8.5%. overall, a solid citrusy DIPA well suited to introduce people to the style.

Pours a nice copper/golden color with a decent white head. Some good lacing is left behind as well. The aroma is very nice with strong smells of hops...citrus, pine, earth, and a very small hint of caramel as well. The flavor profile compliments that of the aroma. Strong bitterness throughout with some faint hints of earth and pine coming through. Very bitter in the finish. A nice DIPA!

Pours a golden with a one fingered head that has a very long retention. Carbonation is constantly flowing like crazy. These Sam Adams sensory glasses work wonders. Smell is as expected a hoppy mother. Citrus and pine strike, though more may be present under the radar. Lemon strikes upon the second smell. Taste is not nearly the wallop I was expecting. Hops are actually mellow and balanced to the point where well, yes this is a hoppy beer, but maybe even a good into to the world of hops for those afraid of an IPA. Alcohol is well hidden. Very impressive. Mouthfeel is good, light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Right for this taste. Drinkability. I would absolutely buy this again and hope I could find some more.

355 mL bottle. (bb Nov 6 08). Aroma is more subtle than expected, with mostly c-hops, and something else that comes in just before the end. The flavour is pineapple, honey, caramel and a little bitter orange. Alcohol is completely hidden. The finish just keeps going and going, and just when you think it’s done, it goes a little more. Body could be fuller. Very solid.
