Commercial Description:
This dark amber wheat beer features fruity and spicy aromas galore. Significant strength underlies the pleasant citric appeal of this bock beer. Redolent with the flavors of harvest fruit, Moonglow typifies the traditional weizenbock-style so thoroughly enjoyed throughout Bavaria. Left unfiltered, its unique yeast strain gives Moonglow a radiance all its own.

Bottle via trade with Dickinsonbeer. Murky orange color with a tan colored head. Aromas of bananas. Flavor is made up of bananas, bread, orange juice and some mulling spices. Very viscous mouth feel.

On tap at Firkin’s, Libertyville, IL. Cloudy amber hued having lasting large creamy white head with good lacing. Intoxicating aroma of swirling spices and fruity esters. No discernable carbonation. Medium-to-full bodied that starts with tart, sweet malt flavor with touches of spices and banana and finishes dry with slight bitterness. Enjoyed the day after the White Sox won the World Series. GO WHITE SOX! Awesome tasty and memorable beer.

I’ve given this a few bottles’ worth of evaluation before adding a rating, and in the end I have to say--it just has this acerbic, sour note that doesn’t agree with me. Maybe some citrus qualities that don’t mesh with the banana-nut bread parts? There’s also other fruit in here too, figs and some dates probably. Some hoppiness as well, but the hop aromas don’t really mesh that well with the hefe yeast phenols. So. Yes. I can’t rave about this as much I’d like to.

Acquired in a trade from BA Px2GrafX, the beer poured out murky amber brown in color with a rich creamy head typical of most Weizen biers. The looks were like a Weizen concentrate, and so was the smell. The smells of banana and clove were found here with a pungency that other Weizens rarely ever exhibit. The taste was again very similar to a hyper Hefeweizen, with every phenolic element present, but only more so. Reminiscent of liquefied banana nut bread with spices, this beer went down very easily with not a single hint of the high ABV content. To add an American twist to the style, a definite hop bitterness was detectable towards the end of each swallow. Carbonation was extremely fine and gave this a creamy mouthfeel. What a dangerously drinkable beer! I can see this one getting someone is trouble quite easily, as it packs quite a punch that you can never see coming. Quite different from Aventinus, as this is more Weizen than Bock.

Ah, a wheat beer that a stout/barleywine drinker like myself can really enjoy. I usually find wheat beers too light for my taste, although I love sniffing them. This beer isn’t light, which is good, and it’s crispness keeps it from tasting heavy. I could just smell this beer all night (if someone could bottle just the scent, I’d spray it all over my wife): I get banana and clove, maybe pear, ginger and taffy. Where most wheat beers let me down when I go from smelling to tasting, this beer comes through with concentrated flavors, so what you smelled is what you get. I could not detect the strong alcohol in the flavor. I really liked this beer, but at $12 (with tax) for a six pack, the price is prohibitive, and I won’t be buying it again for a long time. Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors at Addison and Leavitt, my new favorite local liquor store for good deals on rare stuff.

LvBrewfest. A nice wheat and spicy aroma. Pour was a clouded orange. Flavor was fruit filled happiness, banana, orange and spices. Palate was surprisingly light considering the appearance. Overall I really liked it.

Big nose: wheat and berry, as well as clovey spices. Cloudy crap-brown with a tall foamy head. Cherry malt flavors, sugary sweet. With the wheat base, it’s like a cookir. Light spicey end. Silky smooth and heavy. Alcohol warms slightly going down, especially through the glass.
