| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Dec 21, 2008 120z bottle. Pours amber with a white head. Aroma is of hops, pine, booze, and caramel. Taste was bitter, earthy hops with a nice caramel malt backbone. Notes of citrus, pine, some dark fruit, and spice. Alcohol is very well hidden in the taste, and leaves a nice warming feel. This beer is surprisingly more mellow than I had expected. Very drinkable and refreshing. tgncc (809), Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 20, 2008 The aroma is strongly citrus hops, with some ripe fruit and molasses thrown in. the appearance is a red color, with a off-white head, good lacing. Oilyness on the glass. Strong carbonation. The flavor is dominated again by citrus hops, with some plums, apples and sugar thrown in. The finish is dominated by citrus hops, and the palate is left with an enduring flavor of hops and sugar. I really appreciate the barley wine style, but I am not so crazy about this one. This is way too hoppy for the style. It is more like an IIPA than a barley wine. McGarnigle (306), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 19, 2008 Bottle dated 10/31/2013, so it is pretty young. Citrus/floral hop aroma comes through as soon as I pop the cap. Really pretty clear red, amber color. Carbonation is a little sharper than I would like. Taste is a mixture of plummy sweetness and bitter hops. I might have preferred a bit more age on this one. gbdub (73), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 17, 2008 Updated: Jan 10, 2009Pours deep but clear red-amber with a big, fluffy, off-white head and a lot of visible carbonation. Nose is dominated by spicy hops and sweetness. Very sweet but not cloying caramel, fruit, and spice flavor, with good balance from hoppy bitterness on the finish. The very end is a touch metallic, which is the only knock I have against this one. Otherwise remarkably smooth for something at once this sweet, this bitter, and this alcoholic. branspra (210), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Dec 16, 2008 Bottle. Pours a rich amber color with an extremely large, frothy head. Excellent lacing with aromas of citrus, wine, port, and apple. Nicely balanced carbonation with a creamy and oily mouthfeel. Taste is amazingly smooth, probably one of the best barley wines available. Well done! DTM (541), Winters, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 11, 2008 Botte from Hollingshead Deil in Orange, CA. This was one of the best barley wines of had. Usually you can taste the alcohol, but this was hidden well. Tasted of sweet carmel and spices. Almost perfect balance of malt and hops. Cant wait for my next trip to SoCal in get more! epf33 (222), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
