mtoast (290), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 6, 2008 Deep tawny red color, nice head retention, decent
Lacing. Nose is all about the malt with some underlying
Herbal hoppiness. Very understated flavor, lots of malt. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Mar 6, 2008 Dark amber, transparent pour with minimal head. Smells fruity with notes of cardboard and maybe Saaz hops... slightly bitter with the sweet. Nice carbonation, and well-balanced. Hoppy and slightly citrusy as well as expectedly malty. Again, nice slight bitterness on the finish. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 6, 2008 Updated: Jun 5, 2008Bottle. Pours a dark ruby red, with a medium-sized tan head. Some nice wet dripping lacing remains on the glass. Aroma is molasses, grapefruit, acidic hops, other spices. Interesting. Flavor-wise it’s pretty strong in character. In-season fruits, sweet molasses, brown sugar, grapefruit, mango, plum...nice caramel-like finish. A good tangy mouthfeel. Bitter finish, and easy drinking. Enjoyed this one a lot. Elizavyeta (110), Minnesota, USA Mar 5, 2008 Decided effervescent, this positively scarlet ale has a deep aroma of molasses, nutmeg, and butterscotch.
Flavor itself has an absolute "zip" that hits the sides of the taste buds and offers a long, gentle finish with toasty, cinnamon notes and hints of citrus, pear, burnt coffee.
Ideal as a sipping barley wine, a braised pork dish with dill potatoes would really hit the spot. WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 5, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a clear ruby-red with excellent carbonation and a thin brownish head. Aroma is rich and velvety, with distinct notes of roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit, and spices. Taste is medium-bodied and malty, with a chalky initial flavor of malt opening up into a rich finish of dark fruit, syrupy hops, caramel, and a noticeable boozy kick. An excellent sipper for a cold winter’s day. inkubus27 (237), Highland, Indiana, USA Mar 5, 2008 Expected more out of this one, though i guess it’s not fair that i’m trying to compare it to FFF Behemoth. It’s a great barleywine, the only thing i disliked about it was the harsh finish. It’s has an alcoholic and harsh finish that i didn’t care for. IPAGargoyleGuy (139), Troy, NY, New York, USA Mar 5, 2008 One of my favorites. Sweet and malty, with a fruity hops finish. This beer has a long flavor run, is very thick and creamy, and hides its alcohol well. mhelgason (495), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Mar 4, 2008 bottle. average tan creamy head into cloudy amber body. almost no lacing. aromas of ripe fruit, candied sugar, molasses, and hops. flavor is moderately sweet into a light bitterness. dry texture, sticky mouthfeel, long finish duration, above average carbonation. alcohol is well hidden (though warming is present). awesome barley!
