chicagobears (336), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA Jan 19, 2007 Updated: Feb 3, 2007Clean, well carbonated, burgandy colored, with minimal creamy head. Aroma is of raisins and some carmaely malts. Certainely a well brewed barley wine. This still doesn’t quite meet my expectation as one of the better ones I’ve tried. While this is quite young, with a perfumey flower like hops taste followed by some ripe fruity esters. Hop oils saturate and burn the palate. My kind of beer. This is an immensly enjoyable nite-capper. I will tsave one of this 6-pack for a year from now. murrayswine (101), Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jan 18, 2007 This beer is courtesy of oldirtysurfer.
Poured a ruddy brown/red into my Troublette tulip, with little to no head at all. (Havent found a head inspiring barleywine yet)
THe nose is lush with hops. This is a big beer! Layers of butter, rock candy, and toast give in to a boat load o hop character, and a touch os spearmint.
The taste is smooth at first, than directly hop ripped. The alcoholic bite is fairly prevelant and is tending to muddle the mouthfeel a bit. A little metallic, too, but I think that it need to sit a spell first and breath.
It finishes beautifully with butter pecan, brandy, and hop.
A very good Barleywine, I recommend it. wcampbell (567), Central, South Carolina, USA Jan 10, 2007 Very sweet and strong aroma. I mainly noted a maple flavor in the taste. Alcohol definitely present in the aftertaste. I found that anything more than small sips of this to be overwhelming. This beer would probably be best with food. WeeHeavySD (2932), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jan 8, 2007 12 oz bottle via trade with Kramer17801. Bottled 2/4/05. 11% abv. Pours reddish amber with a small but stable tan head. Even through my clouded nasal passaes I can muster a nice sweet carameley aroma. The taste is a bit lighter then I had expected on the front of the taste, with a much nicer rich warming feeling that extend throughout the rest of he brew. The complexity of the flavor is slightly lacking but more then made up for by the fantastic mouth feeling. With so much good barley wine recieved in recent trades, I could have probably aged this longer, but it was too tempting. wheninhell (485), louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 5, 2007 Updated: Aug 14, 2007Re rate. Thanks Immy. what its hot as hell......why wouldnt i be drinking barley wine?.....uhhh no date on bottle but i think it was this years batch.....so ya know it has about 8 months or so on it. great clear amber brown copper color. great tan head that fades slowly into a thin film. fantastic solid aroma. toffee raisins with a hint of chocolate and pine. very nice balanced bittersweet spicy flavor. toffee raisins spicy black pepper and pine. finish medium dry lingering and quite spicy. nice bit of warm alcohol on the finish. quite like bourbon. full body nice moderate carbonation. this rating doesnt do this beer the justice it deserves.......but i need to shut the hell up and enjoy this fantastic beer!
12oz bottle. bottled 12/14/04. 11%abv. Thanks gputty! clear deep amber color with a nice tan head that leaves a thin film. nice warm aroma. rich malty raisins piney hops. rich sweet malty flavor with lots of piney hops and spicy alcohol. hint of cinnamon. warm spicy bitter hoppy finish. full thick rich sticky mothfeel. very good barley wine. very spicy.would like to try this one again. original rating 1/5/07 Score 7/4/7/4/16=3.8 Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jan 4, 2007 Magenta-amber in color. Caramel, brandyish aroma with a generous side of piney, kind of minty hops. Tastes of citrus, cough medicine, sweet maple and wood. It’s strange and kind of interesting how hoppy it is, but I can’t really decide if that’s likeable or not. Strikingly underdeveloped. coldbrewky (716), Saugerties, New York, USA Jan 4, 2007 Updated: Apr 29, 2008Bottle: 99/00. Pours a nice copper/ lively brown with off-white/tan head. Malty, hop nose, some citrus also....citrus has faded considerabley but is still there if you search. Full bodied. Some malty sweetness but not overly....to a dum dum quality grapeishness Hoppiness works well with the malt.....hoppiness fell off a bit and swirls withthe malt finish and is now blended more Finishes slightly sweet...now a bit grapey with an oily mouthfeel, some alc. showing itself in the finish.
Fantomas23 (463), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jan 3, 2007 Can’t believe I haven’t rated this. Been working on the case that I got last year for Christmas 2005. It’s a year older now and a little better than not bad. Dense copper body with a nice foamy head that starts to form as I agitate it in a snifter. Wonderful fruity aroma that continues to grow as it warms up. Dried apricots and pears. Wet hay and apples. The alcohol burn of cheap Communion wine. So very comforting even in the warm clime of Florida. Great sipping beer to top off a hard day while winding down for a dream-filled slumber. And at the rate I’m drinking this contemplative brew, I’ll have some vintage bottles to carry me on through long, lugubrious times. Makes me almost look forward to them.
