Jan 10, 2001 Heavy hops on the nose; beautifully balanced with loads of soft, chewy malt and flowering, citric hop. At times this is like bathing in hop oils, but the malt and alcohol re-emerge from their slumber to smooth out the edges. A well-named beer, not to be consumed in a standing position.

Aug 7, 2004 Updated: Sep 9, 2004Hazy copper color. Impressive hoppy aroma, fruity and flowery; wonderful malt, caramel. A bit oily, thick; it's a malt juice! Nuts? Powerful, but well mixed, explosion of bitterness. Thanks Philippe (Bov) for sharing this bottle.

Jan 9, 2003 Opaque burnt orange body with minimal tan head. Aroma is cascade hoppy, sweet/strong malty, with strong alcohol presence. Intense sweet/hoppy/alcohol surge at the first sip. Mellows slightly as it warms, giving you the opportunity to note the good malt backbone, but all the essential barleywine elements remain intact. Finishes with a pleasantly warming alcohol burn. A fine beer!

Red-amber color, small off-white head. Bready, hoppy and slightly fruity aroma. Full-bodied, bready, hoppy. Alcohol punch and sweet fruits (+grapefruit) in the aftertaste (together with hops). Nicely balanced, bitter but "not so hard to drink" barley wine.

Mar 8, 2006 Bottle. Dark amber colour with a big beige head. Heavy malty, caramel, hoppy aroma and taste. Medium to full body with a sweet light dry, light alcoholic finish. Great!!!

Jun 28, 2008 Bottle from SoLan, thanks! 11% on the label. Orange dark brown color. Malt, plums, blackberries and a hint of oak in the aroma. Sweet, syrupy, malty flavor with plums, peppermint, oak and earthy hops. Blackcurrant, vanilla. Slightly alcoholic, but still well balanced.

Jul 12, 2008 A Mes rate: bottle from American Beer Distributors.
Darkish red amber colour with a decent beige head. Big rich malty aroma with some good peppery alcohol and plenty of fleshy fruit. Big big flavour. Everything is turned up full. Malts are excellent, so are the hops. Bitterness is spot on, as are the sugar and barley. Strong hit of orange in the finish with some full on bitterness, rounded off with some warming alcohol but not at all over the top. Seriously good stuff.

Aug 24, 2004 On tap at Monk’s Cafe. 1998 Vintage. Poured a dark Mahogany color with a very small off white head. Malty aroma and tastes with dark fruits (plums). Very sweet (candi/brown sugar). Alcohol content very well hidden. Would make a nice after dinner sipping beer. I’m starting to enjoy Barley Wines (a style that is relatively new to me).
