Malty, caramel and brown sugar, smooth with some spices, and alcohol. Would be a great winter warmer! daboskabouter (1470), Fergus, Ontario, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 14, 2002 Dark amber color. Organic hoppy, sweet malty, brown sugar aroma. Syrupy mouthfeel, big hoppy bite, but not like other American barley wines that are overly hopped. Nicely meshed, great alcohol content. The image says it all: don’t drink this if it isn’t bed time. Knocked me and my buddy out. IPFreely (1470), Lewiston, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 9, 2003 Reddish brown color with a medium sized cream colored head. Plenty of fruit and flowery hops in the aroma. Slightly sweet flavor with a nice kick of hops. Wonderful mouthfeel, soft and velvety. Slightly warming. Finish was slightly bitter, sweet, dry and earthy. Extremely well-balanced. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 30, 2003 Bright red-orange. Beige head w/ fine, wispy bubbles. Intensely hoppy aroma--citrus, pine, & fresh dew--w/ lovely malt undertones & alcohol spiciness. Feel is thick, oily, sticky & resiny. Complex flavour that is fruity, malty, & brilliantly hoppy. Very long, bitter finish. My kind of beer! dmac (1466), Toms River, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | May 21, 2007 12 oz bottle. Poured a deep reddish/brown with a nice creamy off white head. Aroma was not nearly as sweet as I expect from this style but had some floral hops, alcohol and musty odor that lingered in the background. Flavor was dry for this style with LOTS of alcohol warming that almost overloads the palate. While it was still fairly cool and the alcohol was some what in check I could taste chocolate covered strawberries, spice, dark fruit and lots of malt. Maybe this one will improve with age. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 13, 2005 Loads of sweet candy like malts in the aroma, lots of caramel, some maple syrup, sweet liquor, a nice spicy, earthy and quite dusty hoppyness to balance out the massive sweetness. Dark crimson body with a creamy and fat off-white head. Flavor starts out with a massive chewy maltyness, lots of caramel, good sweetness with some various fruits, oranges, grapes and plums. Light bitterness in the end to balance it all out, leaves the mouth a little dry. A nice touch of alcohol. TheEpeeist (1458), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 16, 2007 12 oz bottled Dec 14 04. My first craft beer case buy, a direct result of Ratebeer. I wanted to repay a friend for some fall yard work. Hoping to find the best beer i did some googling and found RB. Ended up putting together a case of Old Ho, Storm King, SN Celebration and St.B12. It was too early for new Ho but managed to find a case of 04. Cellared for 2 years. Clear honey brown with a ring and a wisp. Buttery caramel and orange marmalade. A touch of campfire smoke. This has softened quite a bit from earlier samples but still remains vibrant. Tastes much like the aroma promises. Caramel and whipped orange nougat melt away into a grassy bitterness that serves as a perfect foil. A simple barleywine executed to perfection. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 28, 2003 Pours a caramel brown color with frothy, off-white head. The aroma is comprised of a nice balance of hops and malt. A nice fruitiness to go with the caramel and toffee. The finish has a nice hop crispness that is not overbearing and actually quite nice. A little sweet and a little bitter, a pleasantly balanced beer. I'm happy to have finally found it.
