Commercial Description:
Luxuriously rich in character, this warming winter ale delivers over 10% alcohol in an oh-so-seductive manner. Deliciously fruity flavors lie under a bracing hop nose.

12 oz bottle, tulip glass. Cookie, caramel malt (M); grapfruit, pine hops (H); white grapes, pear aromas. Hazy brown-amber body is crowned by a tall, creamy, eggshell head that is slowly diminishing. Heavily sweet flavor becomes a moderately bitter, moderately sweet finish. There's a very big peach flavor in the finish...almost cloying and I'm not a huge fan of peaches to begin with. Medium-heavy body, oily texture, soft carbonation. The bottom line is: the hops don't seem to fight off the sweetness very much...

12oz - Bottled 12/14/04 - Happy birthday to me! - (thanks Jeffin7) Aroma is full of carmel. Hops, leather, oak, and a touch of dark fruit. Pours a deep carmel color with a little head and great lacing. Flavor matches aroma with a bit more alcohol. Still "toasty" after a year in the cellar. Palate is sticky and tart, but clean. First one ever. Need to try a freshy and one aged longer to figure out my perfect Old Ho.

Pours a redish amber color with tan head. Fruity aromas of pear or cherry. I can’t figure out which. Some hints of pine as well. Slightly carbonated, smooth sweet taste. First tastes of wood then finishes a little bitter. Well balanced and really good.

Hoppy citrus aroma. About the same bitterness as Bigfoot, but a little maltier and sweeter. Not as sweet as 3 Floyds Behemoth. Taste some fruitiness. Bitter, sweet finish. Mighty good.

Bottle poured a dark caramel with a decent head that burned off to a light skim. Aroma is sweet malt, overly ripe fruits and light alcohol. Flavor is sweet, caramel and dark fruits with a sweet alcohol finish.

Like an Old Nick from Young"s, but with better balance between sweet malt and classic noble European hops. Plenty of malt and plenty of hops, plenth of caramel and toffee sweetness, with a clear slam of fresh bitter cherries. Interestingly, we both tasted cherries, but were assured that, just as with the V10, there is no fruit or fruit juice added to this beer. At just under 11% the warming presence of alcohol is very obvious, but the perfect balance can hide it and make the beer deceptively easy to drink. This is not a session beer. This is not 'one for the road.' As the name and the label both suggest, you drink this and then you go to bed! // Rerated Dec 8 and I still agree with most of what I wrote before. Balance is wonderful for a barley wine, but there may be just too much alcohol presence and fruity shrillness for my taste. Hard to fault them ... they are signatures of barley wine ... but they are not my favorite tastes in a wine. That said, this is a beautiful barley wine and, having had one, I am certainly going to bed.
