Very viscous, thick as heck as it slowly slogs around the glass. The aroma is considerably sweet; roses, grapefruit. Sweet throughout the drink, very thick and viscous all over the mouth, sticky and smooth... very well balanced. The finish is not too bitter, and amazingly the alcohol is nowhere near what 11% should feel like. Bitter just enough at the end to compliment the sweet fruit flavor and mustiness. I could hardly ask for more from a barley wine. Thank you austinpowers! Cornfield (4966), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA

Deep reddish-amber with a suggestion of a head, this thick drink has an aroma of sweet malt, a yeasty fruitiness, strong floral hops, and the ever-present alcohol. It tastes sweet and malty, the fruits reduced to a hint, the alcohol increasing in its presence, and the hops blaring through loudly, especially in the dry, bitter finish. Nice. I’m definitely cellaring some of these. JPDIPSO (4932), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA

A smaller, but respectible for this style, light tan head. Aroma of cascade off the top, with a touch more malt and alcohol as it warms. Sweetness on the front of the tongue followd by a sharp hops bitterness, with the tongue further assulted by a sharp alcohol kick in the finish. Light fruit flavors followed by fermented raspberries. Changes all the way through the sip. Alcohol distract just a bit too much for this to be world class, but awefully close. jbrus (4894), Delft, Netherlands

I didn’t expect to get this much beer when I poured it in although Victory was already famous over here (to me). Flowers, raisin and caramel aroma. Red-brown colour, light brown head, very good lace that’s slow like oil. Very full, syrupy, sweet, light acidic, raisin, little port. Long lasting hopbitter finish. Very low carbonation. The aroma is very fruity with some crisp hops and a nice solid malt foundation; excellent balance. The flavor is well rounded too, the alcohol isn’t even noticable. The very herbal hop blend and maltiness just gives your palate a massage and says "relax" while the alcohol uses a sneak attack to assult your senses. Very nice barleywine. chriso (4851), London, Greater London, England

Hazy reddish orange colour. Big hop aroma. There’s a heavy malt presence in the flavour, but that nicely balanced by the orangey hops and the alcohol isn’t too overpowering. A nice drop. Bottled at the Green leafe Cafe, Williamsburg.
