Commercial Description:
Luxuriously rich in character, this warming winter ale delivers over 10% alcohol in an oh-so-seductive manner. Deliciously fruity flavors lie under a bracing hop nose.

When most American breweries aggressively hop their barleywines, Victory has stepped in with a nice malty traditional British style barleywine. Intensely rich, sweet, and alcoholic, yet immensely drinkable, this is a great barleywine that should age especially well. Smells almost of sherry or madeira.

ReRate 7/02: Even greater than I remembered. Loved the feeling I got when my upper lip broke the plane of the creamy head, as my nose inhaled a fresh waft of fruity-malt aroma. Then, a rich and warming liquid super-flavor trickled across my tongue, heating my throat and warming my soul. Well-made, complex, and unbelievably tasty. By far, one of the best Barleywines in the world, IMHO. Fruity, full-bodied, malty-sweet, and decently hopped. This beer is wild; it is so thick & syrupy that it doesn’t splash when you pour from great heights (just watch out, the head continues to build long after you stop pouring!) Very good stuff.

A hoppy, but more caramel-like nearly buttery aroma. Up front, very maltly, nearly creamy tasting finishing slightly more hoppy.

Bottle, BB Dec 29, 2011 (so a Dec 29, 2006 bottling, I assume). Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark amber, unfiltered. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, orange, apricot), with notes of candied fruits (mango, pineapple), tangerine, honey, coriander. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Full body, creamy/velvety texture, soft/lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Back to form? This used to rate in the low 4’s all the time for me, then last summer I tried one and it was unimpressive (3.5). This batch seems quite lovely again. Previous sample seemed clear, this one’s definitely unfiltered...that could certainly account for the improved character. Based on other recent Victory samples, I feared the worst for this one, but it looks like this batch is a winner...yum!

Pours a beautiful mahogany with a wispy tan head. Nose is filled with cherries, vanilla and just a whiff of alcohol. Big malty body on this one, almost toffee-ish. Wonderful rendition imo. Full bodied not to much sweetness and abv is expertly hidden. Thanks to tar for this one.

Pours a deep rich bronze with a light beige head. Nose is sweet, tropical fruity and a little hoppy. Flavor: Start is rich, sweet and fruity followed by some hop bitterness and finishing light , dry and slightly acidic. Alcohol is well hidden, but makes itself known. Delicious!

Wonderfully balanced touch of malt and hop bitterness hidden behind the fruitiness. Will have to add more to my cellar!
