Strong hop aromas bringing pine and a mixture of spices to the nose. A wisp of alcohol as well. Tooth tingling alcohol feel that eventually warms the body. Amazingly well balanced between the strong hop presence and the caramel malt flavor, especially for such a young beer. KenB148899 (10), Island Heights, New Jersey, USA

Huge malt and yeast flavour but not salty. Bitterness in the finish with some warming alcohol. I've been saving this for #500 and was glad I did. I must go back to the maproom for more of this stuff.
ReRate-bottle 2002
wow, the flavor profile changes with a hint of Liqorice on the finish. still very well balanced, but less hoppy than it is fresh.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 4, 2003 Meduim amber in color with a floral, alcohol nose. Very sweet flavor of dark brown sugar, burnt caramel and subtle butterscotch notes. Great balance as the sweet trails into a strong hop bitterness. Great all around barley wine. Many thanks to ConiseurofBeer for this bottle. Suttree (2742), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Pours a cloudy brownish copper, with a tint of orange. No head to speak of. Fantastic aroma. Caramel and toffee, with notes of citrus and nuts. Oily, viscous mouthcoating palate - very substantial. The flavor starts mildy sweet - malty and thick. It quickly veers into hop flavors - woodsy, grapefruit, dusty, and earthy. Finishes surprisingly crisp for how "fat" it feels. Fine beer. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 11, 2005 Deep ruby/copper. Bright hop and floral aroma. Surprisingly rich mouthfeel. Hops and alcohol content extremely well-masked under sweet grain/mild hop finish. I’m sure it will be even better a year from now.
