There is a slight alcohol character, but not overpowering. O.K. - but not one of my favorite styles. DrnkMcDermott (1848), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA

Guess I’d just call it a good "dark beer" smell, malty rich, and free of distractions. Taste is light toasted malts, with caramel and just a bit of porter malts, all well balanced with strong German hops, a bit spicier than usual. Hints of smooth ale taste. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 30, 2006 Fruity, sweet flavor with a nice hoppy profile. This is a very good representation of an altbier, which can be hard to excel at. Having trouble putting my finger on all the flavors that exist; there are a lot of things going on here. Alcohol is relatively well hidden for 8.5%. boto (1334), Granby, Connecticut, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 30, 2006 12oz. Bottle: Picked up a sixer at the brewery. This one pours a slightly hazy coppery color. There wasn’t much head, and what was there dropped off quickly. The nose has hints of caramel and maybe some hops in there also. Maybe a whiff of fruits also. An interesting taste. Slightly sweet and also peppery. Maybe a touch of fruit and cinammon also. Intersting and complex. Too bad it’s a one of. I could get used to this one. gearbike (416), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA

I usually do not like these older styles but this is great. It has modest flavors but still retains that old world flavor. A bit sweet with the 8.5% alcohol well hidden. brewblackhole (1374), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 28, 2006 At first the aroma was simply grainey, eventually a little berry came through . Taste was a slightly sweet berry with spicy peppery hop taste, almost like there was a touch of cinnimon in there. That spiceness threw me, i prefer the Zum Uerige LearninBeer (206), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 28, 2006 The aroma is a slight citrus and a sweet dough. The head is fully diminshing with a little lacing. The color is a brown/orange and it is a good tasting ale. The flavor is short but I just finished some habanero chips so this could be misleading. This is my second six-pack and is a good beer that I think most my friends would enjoy and some have.
