Mirage52 (115), New Market, Maryland, USA Aug 24, 2006 From the bottle. Poured the standard golden color. Taste is slightly bitter upfront, but finishes clean. A very drinkable Dort/Helles.
otakuden (196), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2008 The lager beer is probably the most critiqued and critical beer style among beer geeks, enthusiasts, and fanatics. A true and respected beer style of its own, the lager has unfortunately for too many years been undersold by its lighter, blander, more lackluster cousin, the domestic light lager. Thus, the real Lager and her distant relatives have been fighting an ever upward battle to regain their proper place among beer as a well rounded, flavorful, crisp, and balanced beer. While I personally am not a huge fan of the lager, I can and do appreciate a good lager when I can find one. More often than not, the search is more interesting than the final product. Hopefully, with the Dortmunder/Helles V Lager from Victory Brewing I will have found a winner.

A brilliant golden straw in hue, bubbles stream effortlessly for the surface which is topped by a thin, tightly packed head of white foam. No traces of lace or foam remain as the head fades into oblivion. Not necessarily a good omen, but then lagers usually don’t have a largely pronounced head or lace. Her nose reaches out to greet me with hints of wet grass and sweet grain right up front while a refreshing nip of citrus rides her coattails. My first quaff is thin and almost watery with a faint hint of the sweet grains, reminiscent of cereal, along with notes of melon. A very lightly flavored palate, as I delve further into her golden depths, hints of grass and citric esters come out to play. Unfortunately, too little too late for me. As I finish my glass, I am left wondering where my Victory had gone for she surely couldn’t have been in my glass.

While I have enjoyed many of Victory Brewing’s beers, most recently their Prima Pils, I am rather unimpressed with their contribution to the Dortmunder/Helles lager pool. I’m left with not much left to say other than better luck next time. kassner (217), Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 3, 2008 Came in the variety pack which is great, but nothing special. Not much malt, butter, or flavor other than carbonic acid. Better than Miller Light but not much. PilsnerPeter (1627), Flushing, New York, USA Sep 13, 2008 Bottle: Pours a slightly hazy light golden with a fading white head. The aroma is sweet rotted apples and apparent husk- not appealing. The body is very light. Papery and husky flavor with adjunct all over the place. Not much bitterness to speak of. A bit of a mess, however, I would choose this over the macro lagers that are in the mainstream market. italianjohn (100), Bensalem, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 31, 2008 Pours a cloudy gold with barely any head sweet smell and very watery taste goes down easy with a small hint of bitterness at the end has a fresh clean taste definitely on a higher level than the macro crap out there .... a simple lager good stuff Dandman629 (20), Ashburn, Virginia, USA Aug 25, 2008 Overall great lager. Victory brewing never lets me down. Do agree the price is a bit much for this beer. The light frothy head has a sweet golden scent. The smooth lightly malty taste is quite refreshing.
