Silphium (2006), Lansing, Michigan, USA Aug 11, 2007 Draft at the restaurant/brewery. Deep opaque brown-black body, thick creamy nitro head. Aroma of roasted malts and light butter. Incredibly smooth, creamy body with rather dry roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate, well-balanced and immensely quaffable. Very light sweetness. Definitely beats the thin, woody, acidic dry stouts so widespread these days. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Aug 23, 2006 5 oz draft sample at the brewpub, late July 2006. Served on nitro. Opaque and completely black with a lasting smallish smooth brown head....lovely sweet candy-like aroma, with chocolate, almonds and nougat all appearing along with a hint of roasty malt...mellow, moderately bitter chocolaty body with some medium-roast coffee thrown in towards the finish....smooth throughout, just a hint of bite, perhaps a little too thin at the end. Still easily the best beer that I sampled from this brewer. CharlesDarwin (1376), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 24, 2006 Updated: Feb 10, 2006On tap at the Brewpub Didn’t really consider this a Guinness clone, considering this beer actually had flavor. Pour of deep black with brown fringes and tan clean head. Tangy roast aroma. Heavy sugar and roast flavor. Strong scotch, oak, and oat flavors on the back end. Touch of earthy and chewy grain over a little charcoal. Palate is a little thinner than I would like, but it’s drinkable. jtw (909), farmington, Michigan, USA Aug 23, 2005 a guinness clone, nitrogen dispense. decently bitter and roasty with an artificially creamy mouthfeel inhereted from the nitro, but at best this is solid beer. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Feb 17, 2005 On nitro-tap at the brewpub: Aroma of mild roasted malt with slight chocolate, vanilla hints, and a subdued boubon heat to it as it warms.
Shadowy pitch black with a thin but firm sandy tan head that keeps its froth for a good while til a fluffy collar and thin skim remains. Spotty lace sticks well all over the glass.
Nice and frothy flavors of light roasty coffee, touches of chocolate and barley flakes; cindered dry hop wood and a thinner char note back up the finish with tiny tid bits of heat.
Feel is a bit thinner then medium, but seemingly keeps a good smoothness and frothy texture and is favorably roasted. A pretty solid offering from nitro tap for this stout.
