| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 2, 2005 Complex aromas ranging from toasted bread to vanilla and cocoa. The quickly diminishing, small khaki head did leave some lacing. When held to a strong light, the edges of the glass glowed a deep, blood crimson, while the center remained a murky black void...this stout seemed both inviting and enigmatic. The kind of beer that, as soon as it is poured, lets you know it will be fantastic.
The flavor begins sweetly, then glows with a hint of woodiness before finishing with a nice round thud. The lingering flavors are many steps from overpowering, and hold on just long enough to make you want more. Oily, bordering on syrupy, this beer has a comparitavlely lively level of carbonation, perfectly balancing out the flavors and texture.
One more thing: this beer seems to actually "open" like a fine red wine...increasing levels of toastiness and woodiness will greet you with each sip.
This is definitely a "must try"...perfect for cold winter nights...or any time, really!! erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 18, 2005 Does not passs the flash-light test. It does have legs. Raisiny aromas with a fair amount of roastiness. Great thick body. Vineous and raisiny flavors with a fair amount of choclatiness and vanilla. Could use some more hops in the finish and more grains in the mash! ChrisPants (317), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 15, 2005 Pours oily black with tan head. Smells roasty, malty, darkhoppy. Smooth palate, some lingering alcohol on the finish. Slight burgundy or whisky finish, making me feel like I’ve just had something good and naughty. I’ll try this again. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 10, 2005 bottle-pours pitch black with a faint tan head. Dave’s sample got more head than mine did. chocolate, rum, roast aroma. Sweet, smokey dark chocolate flavors. There is a vineous quality to this beer due to the cask aging (i wonder what kind of cask they used). Finish is long with big notes of dark chocolate and rasin. a very good IMp stout. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 10, 2005 Very dark brown body and a soft, light brown head. Big rum raisin in the nose. Also has port-like characteristics. Chocolate malt and roast come through as well. Nice, interesting combination of grapes and chocolate in the flavor. Smooth, even body. A very solid, interesting imperial stout.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 2, 2005 tried this one with great anticipation, not really know what to expect, all was looking great as I poured it, but it went downhill from there, there was a fairly strong alcohol taste that really kind of put a damper on the mood, not bad, but not nearly as great as what I was hopping for
